FANFICTION!!! My new obsession because my new bestie (yes I'm talking about you) is an amazing writer who seriously needs to be published. But anyway back to my new obsession. I love reading books but sometimes the author just gets me pissed off with how they end somethings like, did so and so die? or why did this character do this or that? Because of my over active brain activity that makes me think things that I shouldn't (yes I wrote that) I decided to google things like alternate endings to twilight or vampire academy and BOOM!! I got hit with fanfictions of all kinds. Now I know your probably thinking this is an article about getting into fanfics or even why people should read fanfic. This is an article for those few who are opened minded enough, those curious buggers that are probably wondering what is this genius thing that is bringing different people around the world together?
There should be warning signs when reading fanfics like "all those who enter shall not return" or something.
First warning: only 10% is worth reading.
I have been reading fanfics for a couple months now and there are so many of them; the good, the bad , the cute and fluffy, even the horrendous ones that make you wish you wish you could bleach your brain. Like 90% of fanfiction is poorly written in almost everything from grammar to plot. If you are a new fanfic reader, 9 out of 10 times whenever you first click something it will be bad like really bad.
Second Warning: your Fave person/ character image will totally be destroyed.
In fiction these are what we call OC (original characters) but this is only when they change things that weren't originally there. One minute they're a normal person and next they're an evil crime fighting zombie that falls in love with an elf. (yes weird stuff like that happens).
Third Warning: incomplete stories
If you manage to find a good fanfic among the 10% mentioned above, and the characters have not been butchered beyond belief, there is still a possibility of it being one of those fanfictions that never got completed. They're like your favorite potato chip bags that have mostly air in them, then you find out that those potato chips are no longer in stock when you go back to the store.
In the world of fanfiction, if a good author disappears, it is often forever. They never come back to the story. You could have the main character falling down from a building and never ever know if he or she lives. You could be reading about the beginning of the final confrontation between a powerful sorceress and an angel of destruction, and then end up frustrated when there isn’t a button that leads you to the next page.(im looking at you, yeah you person who hasn't finished writing that story and is trying to kill me with the suspense.)
The warnings, are not to deter people from trying fanfiction. Even if 90% of fanfiction is awful, it means that there is still 10% waiting for you out there, inviting you to think of ‘what ifs’, enticing you to different battles than the ones fought in the original stories, to see a familiar story unfolding through the eyes of another character.
Of course, it’s not going to be easy to find that 10%. You would have to read the first chapter before determining if it’s worth it.
