The University of Kansas has many notable alumni to boast about. Did you know that the following 10 people were indeed Jayhawks?
1. Kate Spade
Born as Katherine Noel Brosnahan and now known as Kate Valentine, she is the co-founder and namesake of highly popular designer brand, Kate Spade New York. Although she finished her degree in Journalism at Arizona State University, her roots are in Kansas.
2. Mandy Patinkin
“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
You might recognize this famous line perfected by Patinkin in "The Princess Bride." Patinkin attended KU in the 1970s, and has since returned to campus to meet with KU theater students. You might also know him as Jason Gideon from "Criminal Minds."
3. Gillian Flynn
Gillian Flynn is an extremely successful author, screenwriter, comic book writer, and television critic. Flynn is the author of the chilling novel that was made into the hit motion picture "Gone Girl." She attended high school at Bishop Miege, and received her undergraduate degrees in English and Journalism at KU.
4. Paul Rudd
Paul Rudd is an actor, comedian, writer and producer. He attended Shawnee Mission West High School and then pursued his degree in theater at KU. He was also a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He is best known for his roles in "Clueless" and "Friends."
5. Kathleen Sebelius
Kathleen Sebelius, former Kansas governor, received a master's in Public Administration from KU in 1980. Appointed by President Barack Obama to be secretary of health and human services, she has been highly involved in the national discussion on health care reform, swine flu, and other issues.
6. Rob Riggle
Rob Riggle attended Shawnee Mission South High School and graduated from KU with a B.A. in Theater and Film. Riggle was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He is best known for his comedic roles in "The Hangover," "The Other Guys," "Step Brothers," "Saturday Night Live," "21 Jump Street," and 22 "Jump Street."
7. Scott Bakula
Scott Bakula is an actor known for his work on “Quantum Leap,” “Star Trek: Enterprise,” and “Murphy Brown." He attended KU through his sophomore year in the 1970s.
8. Clyde Tombaugh
Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto. He earned his bachelor of science degree from KU in 1936.
9. Dean Smith
Dean Smith, member of KU’s 1952 men’s national championship basketball team, went on to a legendary coaching career. He was named a "Coaching Legend" by the Basketball Hall of Fame. While at KU, he majored in mathematics and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
10. Etta Moten Barnett
Etta Moten Barnett studied voice and drama at KU in the 1920s. She was the first black star to sing at the White House, and is also known for portraying Bess in "Porgy and Bess."
