Famous Faces Behind Disney Characters

The other night, my dad roped me into watching one of his favorite comedies with him, City Slickers starring Billy Crystal. About halfway through the movie I shouted "Oh my gosh! That's Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc!" I could not believe it. I had seen Crystal in other films like When Harry Met Sally, but until then I had never realized that he was the voice behind everyone's favorite one-eyed, green monster. The whole situation got me thinking; what other characters are voiced by famous actors and actresses who have careers outside of Disney. So I did a little research and here is a list.

Simba: Matthew Broderick

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Know what movie that line is from? Here's a hint: the guy who says it also did the voice of Simba in The Lion King. That's right, it's Matthew Broderick aka Ferris Bueller, and I can't help thinking Bueller's advice would go over well with Simba and his Hakuna Matata motto. Broderick is also know for his roles in movies like The Producers, Glory, and Inspector Gadget.

John Smith: Mel Gibson

The brave John Smith is voiced by the legendary Mel Gibson. You might recognize him from movies like Braveheart, Lethal Weapon, and The Patriot.

Thomas: Christian Bale

Before he was Bruce Wayne in the iconic Batman trilogy, Christian Bale did the voice of a minor character in Pocahontas named Thomas. Bale is also known for American Hustle, The Fighter, and The Prestige.

Rapunzel: Mandy Moore

Remember that girl named Jamie in A Walk to Remember that made your cry your heart out over a gallon of ice cream? Well, she also did the voice for the awkwardly endearing Rapunzel. You can see more of Moore in License to Wed, Because I Said So, and Chasing Liberty.

Esmerelda: Demi Moore

The enticing yet kind gypsy from The Hunchback of Notre Dame is voiced by Demi Moore. Some of Moore's other works include Ghost and A Few Good Men.

Aladdin: Scott Weinger

Everyone who has seen the 90s TV show Full House remembers DJ Tanner's heartthrob boyfriend Steve. It turns out that Scott Weinger, who played the role of Steve, also did the voice of Aladdin. #TeamJasmine

Jane: Minnie Driver

Jane from the movie Tarzan got her lovely voice from the actress Minnie Driver. Driver's notable works include Good Will Hunting, Princess Mononoke, and Ella Enchanted.

Tarzan: Tony Goldwyn

Before he was President Grant on the hit TV show Scandal, Goldwyn voiced the character Tarzan. You might also recognize him as Tris's father in Divergent.

James P. Sullivan (Sully): John Goodman

The voice behind the big bear-like, blue monster in Monsters Inc. and Monsters University is John Goodman. Goodman came to fame after he was on the TV show Saturday Night Live. He later appeared in countless other comedic TV shows and movies like Roseanne, The Big Lebowski, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? And Sully isn't the only Disney character he voiced. Goodman also did the voice of Pacha on The Emperor's New Groove.

Anastasia: Meg Ryan

Anastasia, a movie recently acquired by Disney, is the story about a Russian duchess who loses her memory of who she is. Anastasia is played by actress Meg Ryan. Ryan is also famous for her roles in When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail, and Sleepless in Seattle.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
