To My Family Members Who Are Against Gay Rights

I have some thoughts to get off my chest.

Think Progress

Hello,

I've been contemplating how to start this letter for over an hour, wondering if you're even going to read it. You may think that what I'm going to say in this article is unfair or even dumb, but all I ask is that you hear me out and consider what I'm saying. When I caught on or heard that you don't support gay rights, something broke between us, and that can only be repaired by you opening your mind.

I understand that your religion is important to you. I understand and I respect that. Your religious beliefs are of course valid and I'm not going to insult what you believe. However, using your religion to openly discriminate against gay rights is not okay. I know so many loving and devoted Christians who support the LGBTQ+ community in our pursuit for equal rights.

Religion has been utilized to persecute certain groups before, that's simply a fact. Just as religion didn't make slavery or sexism okay, it's not an excuse for homophobia either. And, yes, you are homophobic. I know you don't like that word, but when you want to oppress gay people and you think being gay is wrong, you are homophobic. If you don't like being labeled as such, then change your beliefs. You'd be doing us both a huge favor if you did.

This is not a matter of different opinions. I don't think you've ever understood that factor. It's not a simple manner of "I like Pepsi products and you like Coca Cola." It's not even a matter of different political beliefs. I can respect your ideas for healthcare and minimum wage even though they vastly differ from mine. I cannot, however, be okay with you not supporting gay rights. This is a personal matter for me. These are issues that affect my life. You supporting businesses being able to deny customers based on sexual orientation directly affects me and my future. Your "opinion" is an attack on me and my community.

I don't owe you my understanding, my patience, my love, nor my respect when you are part of a culture that makes life so difficult for queer individuals. You are the reason myself and so many other queer kids struggled to accept themselves. You are the reason behind kids getting bullied for who they love. You are the prejudice that justified the Pulse shooter's hatred. Your bigotry adds to the culture we have in the United States today, and you need to take responsibility for contributing to the homophobia that still runs rampant throughout the country.

I know you love me, despite me being gay, but I don't want your love. Not when you don't even support me getting married to a woman one day. I'm proud to be a lesbian and no amount of bigotry from you will ever change that. Love will always win, so you better get used to it.

Sincerely,

Me (your proud gay family member)

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
