Family Makes Traditional Tallahassee Fun

Windy mini roadtrips. Coffee ice cream at a county store. Cheering at a football game. A nice weekend indeed.

Family Makes Traditional Tallahassee Fun

My family came to visit this weekend. They drove to Tallahassee and after the immediate excitement, left to settle in at their hotel. My immediate family: three siblings, two parents and a dog. The dog (sadly) couldn’t make the trip but nevertheless, I was beyond elated to see my family. I’m graduating soon (YIKES) and realized my family had only all been together in Tallahassee once before. It was a bit odd to have them here all at once. My brother and youngest sister had previously visited the year before but it felt like this was their trip for some reason. Yet, once we got an initial lunch and my mom hung up her new jacket, we were sort of lost as to what to do next. Where to go? Aside from various restaurants or touring the frat houses and funneling beer, we (my sister and I) couldn’t think of anything to do. My mom had grabbed a magazine advertising the article Top Ten Things To Do In Tallahassee. We were off! — with some amendments to the list.

Where We Went

  • Got breakfast at Bada Bean. We sat outside. Luckily, the weather was lovely. We sipped on coffee and stayed on the lookout for dogs. My croissant and egg sandwich was delicious. Good stuff.

-We walked around campus. Crossed Landis Green. Pointed out landmarks aka Storzier Library, Ruby Diamond Hall. I joked with my mom that I hadn’t been over to the other side of campus since freshman year.

  • Drove around town. Debated going to see a movie. Decided against it. Sat at Cascades park and enjoyed a nice meal outside. My brother was a bit restless and we couldn’t decide on any one place to go. Must say, the stop at Cascades park had coffee and people walking puppies and was my favorite stop on our Tallahassee journey. With such wonderful weather, it was the best place we could’ve gone to relax.
  • Went to Monticello, GA. Walked around looking for a bakery. They were closed unfortunately. Walked around various antique shops.

- Highlight: Went to the game. I’ve never really enjoyed watching football but had the best time at the game. The energy was crazy electric. It was tense in the second half. We were upset about the score but had such a fun time cheering and joking and predicting what would happen next.

While the weekend did pass quickly, I was happy to have my family in town and lucky that they took the trip to visit me and my sister. Hopefully the weather stays this nice in the upcoming week. Have a nice week, friends. Remember to cherish those around you and enjoy friends and family!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
