Family Is All That Matters

Love your family, no matter how dysfunctional

Family Is All That Matters

There is nothing more important than family. Family ... the people who can get you through anything and everything. Recently, my family has experienced a great shock and it has tried and tested our strength, but our family is continuously helping us through it. I realize that not every family is as close as mine, but even if they aren't close or you don't talk a lot, chances are they will be there for you.

Always treasure the time you have with each and every person you have in your life. You were born into your family, and chances are they want to be with you, create memories, and maybe even share a story or two. Maybe there are some family members who you don't get to see very often anymore, but when you do see them, its like no time has passed at all. It is family like that that makes having a family worth it.

Having such an unconditional love for people in your life is kind of scary, especially when you know that life doesn't go on forever, no matter how much we would all like it to. They know from before the time you're born, and you share countless, irreplaceable experiences with them from before you're born to the time you grow up. But one thing I have learned recently, is that no matter what happens, that person will always be there, even if they aren't "there."

No matter what goes on in life, people can never take away your memories of your family or the time you spent with them, and all the things you could have possibly picked up or learned from them. They will always be that person who drove you to school or helped you reach tall things, or even just that person who would sit there with you after a long day, and you wouldn't have to say anything because you both knew that sometimes you just need to sit and think. Family will always have your back, and they will always guide your thoughts and actions throughout your life as you continue to become the person they've always wanted to see.

Your family and your friends - the family you choose - they are the people that can pull you through anything, and they will be there for you in your darkest times, your greatest victories, and everything in between. They are the people you should always be able to count on when you are having a bad day, or even a great one, and you just want to share it with someone. It always helps when you have a family who will always say, "no matter what everything will be fine," because even if it doesn't feel like it in that moment, you know eventually somehow, someday, everything will be fine, and you will find your new normal. So love your family and cherish every moment with them, no matter how functional or dysfunctional it may be.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
