A Family Impacted By ALS

ALS affects not only the patients but the families and friends as well. Brad Gildenblatt is just one of the thousands of stories that need to be heard.

A Family Impacted By ALS

Smiles. Laughter. The Beginning.

Determined. Loyalty. Family.

Brad, Pam, and Caitlin pushed on searching for answers. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks a person's spinal cord and brain. Specifically, the motor neurons affect a person's ability to control their muscles. As time passed on, Brad's legs started showing symptoms of the disease taking its toll. Even after a few months, Brad struggles with walking. Brad has to use a walker or a scooter to get around, and every so often, he has difficulty talking, and his speech slurred. But, ALS is a speed bump and Brad continues to fight through it.

Fighting. Hope. Faith.

Brad's family has been trying everything they can to help him. Essential oils have been a starting point to provide him with as much comfort as possible. When Brad started losing his motor ability, daily tasks became an uphill battle. And the things millions of people take for granted like driving seemed impossible. But, ALS wouldn't control Brad's life or his ability to do everyday tasks. Brad now drives a car using hand controls and goes to physical therapy to try and build his leg strength. No disease can define someone, and Brad is a perfect example of that.

Awareness. Progress. Breakthrough.

ALS awareness boomed through a fundraising campaign called the Ice Bucket Challenge. Due to the millions of dollars fundraised, scientists have now had a breakthrough with how ALS attacks the body. Scientists believe that the affected areas deal with a protein in the brain, called TDP-43. Scientists believe that they can fix these proteins and help stop the progression of the disease and hopefully one day find a cure.

Reflection. Action. Stand Up.

ALS affects thousands of people and their lives. It is a horrific disease that over the years gave no hope to families and their future. But, now we have hope: for patients, for families, for people like Brad who day in and day out continue to fight for their body and strength. I admire and look up to Brad and the thousands of people affected, for they are the true heroes and examples of hope.

So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
