If you're someone who stays up to date on current events, you'll know by now that the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy has separated thousands of children from their parents at the US-Mexico border.
So, what exactly is going on?
To summarize, Trump and his administration created a policy that requires everyone who is crossing the border illegally, including those seeking asylum, to be prosecuted. This process is sending immigrants to prison, forcing parents to be split from their children. Over 2,000 children have been separated from their parents and there doesn't seem to be any system in place to keep them safe or to reunite them with their family. Trump has said that he'll soon be "signing something" that will put an end to this outrageous policy, but it's still unclear what his plan is and how it'll affect those who have already been separated.
If you're still confused as to how this is happening and what it all means, do some research to get a deeper understanding of the situation, there are plenty of great articles out there that explain all sides of the story.
Why is this such a big deal anyway?
Think back to your history classes that you probably should have paid more attention in: Native American children forced into boarding schools, enslaved African American families ripped apart and Jews stuffed into concentration camps, remember those? This is a similar situation, another atrocious act that is completely disrespecting and disregarding human rights.
What can we do?
We can take action! Show your opposition to this policy by calling your representatives and senators, joining the nationwide "Families Belong Together" rally on June 30th and spreading awareness. Stand up for what is right and let your voice be heard.
