Fame Is A Dangerous Drug

Three celebrities that show what fame and fortune does to you

Fame Is A Dangerous Drug

When I was younger, my biggest wish in life was to become famous. I'm sure most people have had this thought as a young child at least once. Who wouldn't? Young children see celebrities on television with massive homes, expensive cars, and decked out wardrobes. With children watching reality shows, red carpet events, and shows showing off celebrities wealth, such as MTV Cribs, they believe that fame is all fun and games and they wish to be like these celebrities. Yet, is fame really that worth it? Clearly, fame has it's perks, but what about the downsides to fame that no one ever talks about? What has happened to the celebrities that have been in the limelight for quite some time now, without any bit of privacy? Although fame has turned these average joe's into superstars, fame has harmed their well being in many ways.

1. Lindsay Lohan

Lindsey Lohan started her acting career at a very young age, causing her childhood to be shortened. She was in many popular films such as The Parent Trap and Mean Girls, and children looked up to her as their role model. Yet, where is Lindsay Lohan now? Due to the constant spotlight and lack of privacy, Lohan has turned to drugs. She was arrested many times in 2007 for driving under the influence and possession of cocaine, along with her arrests in 2009 multiple times for a DUI. Many mugshots later, Lindsay was arrested again in 2012 due to violently attacking a man, and punching another man in the face.

2. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus was another big celebrity that many children looked up to when they were younger. Starring as the main role on the classic television show Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus received many fans, especially fans that looked at her as their role model. However, getting into this business so early in her life, at just thirteen years old, Miley never had the full childhood experience. With constant paparazzi, people continuously judging her decisions, and lack of privacy, Miley had a meltdown in 2012, shaving her head and becoming quite promiscuous. Her meltdown eventually caused her to turn to drugs, create vulgar music, and display nudity at many of her concerts.

3. Britney Spears

Britney Spears was a god among singers in the late 90's and early 2000's. With her first hit "Hit Me Baby One More Time", that came out in 1998, she had fans all over the world begging for more. She released this song at age seventeen, and her fame only grew from there. She was listed as one of the top ten most famous singers of the year 2000. Yet, in 2007, Britney went off the walls and decided to shave her head to cover up her drug use. Abusing drugs for many years, Spears has been in and out of rehab, in and out of intervention programs, and has finally gotten her life back together again. Ten years later, and Spears today says "What the hell was I thinking?"

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
