Why I'm Falling For Fall
the odyssey

Fall is approaching and that is something to get excited about! While the reasons why I love fall are endless, here are just a few that I simply cannot wait for...

Scarves and Sweaters

Fall means scarves, sweaters, boots, hats and gloves galore. This time of the year is hands down the trendiest and most versatile season, but most importantly it is the coziest. Fall makes for the comfiest clothes, cute fall items are just an added bonus.

Holiday Drinks

Fall means seasonal drinks, and while you may think you are limited to a Pumpkin Spice Latte, the options are endless: Eggnog lattes, Caramel Brulée Lattes, Peppermint Mochas, Gingerbread Nut Lattes and any other holiday flavored concoction your heart desires.

Pumpkin Carving

There is no such thing as being too old for pumpkin carving. Whether you like to freestyle your creation or get a little bit of help from a carving book, you can’t go wrong. It is not about the final product (at least not for somebody artistically challenged such as myself), but the memories that come along with pumpkin carving with the people you love the most.

Halloween Movies

My favorite way to immerse myself into the fall spirit is kicking off the season by watching Halloween movies with friends. Whether your cup of tea is Nightmare on Elm Street, Hocus Pocus or Halloween Town, most Halloween movies are classics that fully encompass the spirit of fall and leave you excited for what is yet to come in the season.

Crisp Air

Crisp fall air feels like magic to me. There is something about the clear fresh air, being able to feel the chill on your face and seeing your breath while you exhale that is calm and refreshing. Fall is full of rosy cheeks and red noses but being bundled up in fall clothes keeping the rest of you cozy and insulated makes for the most comfortable weather.

Pillsbury Pumpkin Cookies

The most processed, yummiest, most festive cookies are back in season and I could not be more excited. Nothing makes me nostalgic for Halloweens growing up the way these cookies do.

Thanksgiving

My all time favorite part of fall is Thanksgiving. What could be better than family, friends and food?

The Colors of Fall

So much of the spirit of fall is associated with the burnt orange and red leaves falling swiftly from the trees and the satisfactory crunch you can feel with each step. Autumn walks are my favorite kind, strolling in the brisk air while listening to the birds sing and taking in all of the vibrant colors cannot be compared to anything else.

The Music

I may or may not break out the Michael Bublé Christmas album a bit earlier than I should.

Decorations

Everywhere you turn there are spooky and creative decorations, from pumpkins on peoples' porches, stores being decorated or the decorations which make downtown become alive, it is exciting to see all of the different decorations each year.

Football

Fall means football and football means happiness. There is nothing like spending a fall weekend watching college and professional football.

The Smells

The smells of fall are nearly indescribable and I long for them each year. Walking into a home filled with warm spice air and the scent of fresh baked cookies is what it means to smell like fall. All of the different baked goods and flavored candles make for a warming environment that is unlike any other season.

So there you have it, a few of the reasons why everything fall cannot come soon enough.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
