We are at the beginning of arguably the best season for television, fall! It’s the most hyped time for returning shows as well as new series. Now I’m known for watching almost everything, but there are some things I just can’t get into. So I’ve compiled a list of the shows I’m excited for new and returning, but I’ve also touched on some I think should’ve never been made.
"The Leftovers"
This show really has a slow start. I will admit that when it premiered last year that I was not necessarily a fan of it. The music, that I’ve come to actually really like, threw me off and made me foresee so many parodies. But as the season went on, the mystery of what happened to all the disappeared, started to get more and more enticing. Season 2 premieres October 4, on HBO, set in a new town with an almost completely new cast.
"American Horror Story: Hotel"
I feel I must be completely honest when talking about the "American Horror Story" franchise … I haven’t watched it in years. I watched the first season and thought it was great, but for some reason I just didn’t feel like watching the other seasons. That is until now. I will be watching AHS: Hotel because Mother Monster herself, Lady Gaga is starring this season and she is amazing. I have been excited for this show since I heard about her being cast, and I don’t really enjoy scary movies or shows. Not because I’m afraid, but because they’re just not that good. This isn’t me saying that all the other seasons weren’t good; Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have the golden touch. This season will most definitely be a bit more “fearce” than the last.
"Fear the Walking Dead"
"The Walking Dead" is a lot of people’s favorite show and I can clearly see why. I remember watching the very first episode when it premiered years ago. It is great, but I feel it’s gotten a bit redundant. So when I heard that "Fear the Walking Dead" would be set at the beginning of the outbreak and in Los Angeles the only real thought that came to my head was, “thank God no more freakin forests!” This new batch of characters has absolutely no clue what they’re doing and I love it. I love screaming at my TV screen, “In the head, you have to get them in the head!!!!!” My love for zombies has been reignited. The cast is also phenomenal, Kim Dickens is great and I love Frank Dillane as a teenage drug addict. Really complex, and I just can’t wait to see their struggle.
" Scandal"
Are you a gladiator? Do you wear the white hat? If you don’t get those two questions I really don’t think we can be friends. "Scandal" has returned and my body cannot handle it. I and the rest of the world have been having some serious Olivia/Fitz withdrawals. Shonda Rhimes rules the world and her characters break my heart, make me laugh, and force me to be a better woman.
"How to Get Away With Murder"
This show is another amazing Shonda Rhimes production. I will admit that I am late to the game not from lack of interest, just from missing my chance to watch it from being so busy. It was recently added to Netflix and I am quickly catching up. Binging like no one has ever binged before. I really didn’t think she could top herself, but Shonda really deserves all the awards ever. As a writer I am in awe and I envy her.
"Dancing With the Stars"
Please cancel this train wreck of a show. I know it’s for charity, but there are so many other ways to feed the children. I have seen clips of this show and it is horrendous. The only person I ever wanted to win was Zendaya because she is phenomenal. Other than her it really is chock full of Q-list celebrities that I don’t want to see urban tango to Meghan Trainor.
"Scream Queens"
Love, love, love this show. Satire has never been stronger. This show is for anyone who loves "Clueless", "Horror", "The Scary Movie" series, and just kitsch in general. This may arguably be the most quotable show I have ever seen. I also must say that I’m extremely impressed by Lea Michele. I really thought that she was one dimensional, but with this role I can see her as a true actress. Lea is a hot mess, but so are all of the other characters. This isn’t a joke, they are all crazy.
"Empire"
Serving soap opera realness daily! "Empire" is back, and ready to steal all the ratings. If your show is on Wednesdays at 9 p.m., you might as well cancel it yourself. Everyone will be watching Cookie Lyons take the throne. People have a lot to say about this show, but as it’s been said, by Lee Daniels himself, it’s a throwback to old soap operas like "Dynasty" which means the characters are larger than life. They are dramatic and loud and they occasionally slap each other. If you don’t like it that’s fine, go watch another season of: "Modern Family", "Criminal Minds", or "Law and Order SVU." #boring
"Supergirl"
In the words of Ray J, if I had one wish, it would be to never ever have to see another comic book based show or movie again. Why won’t you all let this fad die? Please let it die. I can’t take it anymore. We as a culture are letting original content go down the drain. I’m an adult, I don’t want to relive my childhood. New shows are getting canceled because everyone wants to watch the same story about a superhero instead of something relevant and thought provoking. I like it because it’s a female superhero, but I hate it because I’m genuinely sick of superheroes. Hopefully it will die, just like vampires did.
"Blindspot"
This show just premiered so I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. I watched the first episode and my only real issue with it was that from the first 10 or so minutes I could already guess that lead actress Jamie Alexander who I think really makes the show and the FBI agent she seems to be stick with, are most definitely going to end up together. Why? I’d like it more if she was just alone for a few seasons focusing on her career than immediately needing the comfort of this strong FBI man. Maybe she’s not even into guys? Something different please is all I ask for. Jamie Alexander is a great actress and this show actually seems to highlight that, NBC needs to take notice and not waste this opportunity.
"Blackish"
Laughing so hard it hurts is good for you, right? This show is back for season 2 and I am so excited. I’m usually not into shows that are different every episode and have no real connection to the previous episode, but comedy is an exception. I don’t have much to say about this show other than it’s a great representation of black culture. The comedy comes from everywhere, my favorite being the attempt to understand each other although the characters are from three different generations. There’s the old school, the new school, then the really really really new school.
"Flesh and Bone"
This show doesn’t premiere until sometime in November, but I’ve been waiting for it for over a year. It needs to be out now. The show is an edgy take on ballet. It’s a miniseries on Starz network, I usually shy away from the channel, but this seems beyond interesting. It’s about a young ballerina trying to find herself in the NY ballet scene and is shot in a way that is almost bone breaking. I know dance is a tough world, but ballet can be so rigid and cold so a glimpse inside is more than I can ask for. David Michod who directed the Oscar nominated film "Animal Kingdom" directs the first episode so that alone gives you a sense of how dark this series will be. Can’t wait.
