Why Fall Is A Reminder To Forgive Yourself

"You cannot change the seasons, but you can change yourself."

Why Fall Is A Reminder To Forgive Yourself

The weather has shifted down from ninety degrees. The leaves have sprung vivacious colors. It is fall. School has started up again. The year is beginning to rap up. The holidays will soon be arriving. Only one ideal is consistent throughout this time, and that is change.

Forgiveness comes through change. We forgive others once we see through their actions, and realize that they have changed for the better. Some of us learn to forgive others so that we no longer carry the burden of pain ourselves.

When it comes to forgiving yourself, there is a whole new ball game at play. In order to forgive ourselves, we must be open to the idea that we have done wrong. We are not perfect, and whether we want to or not, we will always be going through some sort of growth or change.

Our physical growth can be compared to the leaves on the trees during fall. They are changing colors. They are brightening up to their full potential. It is their physical alter. We grow older, and we grow into our body every single day. All of the cells that make up who we are as human beings are constantly reproducing. These cells can be compared to the leaves. But this is only one part of the tree. The tree itself is the center of it's whole being. It still stays rooted in the ground. Even when the leaves begin to wither and fall off, the tree is still standing tall.

We too will continue to stand tall, no matter how many parts of our being are shed. No matter how many mistakes we make within our lifetime, we always have the opportunity to change. This change cannot be made possible without forgiving ourselves. The trees forgive themselves every year for the leaves previously fallen, and always create new beautiful ones.

So forgive yourself. Forgive yourself for whatever you feel is holding you back from the change that you know will create a better you. Forgive yourself for hurting someone else, for the regret you feel, for the past that you can no longer go back to. Knock down the wall of self-negative thoughts that persuade you to think any differently. Let old habits die so that new habits can grow in their place in due time. Growth and change is the most important part of forgiving one's self.

Each day will pass, and a new shift will always be taking place. The weather will continue to grow colder. The trees beautifully bold colors will collect on the ground. In time, these will be replaced with even more beauty.

Forgive yourself so that the beautiful parts of you can continue to grow.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
