Fall: More Than A Season

Fall is such a wonderful time of the year, what's not to love about it?

Most students hate going back to school in the late summer. It’s still too hot, there’s that whole “going to class” thing again, and you have to see people that you don’t really like 100% on a daily bases. For me though, I don’t mind going back to school, especially since I’m in college. I start to miss my friends, and the classes that I’m taking are more towards my major, so they're interesting to me. Although the cafeteria food sucks most of the time.

The number one thing that I love about going back to school is that fact that fall is in the air. Even though New England weather can be really up in the air a majority of the time, the fall weather during those first few months of school are priceless. Not too hot, but not too cold during the day, and even though it can be freezing at night most of the time, it’s the perfect moment to sit on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate and a good movie with your friends and family.

Now I know I’m getting all nostalgic here, but I just can’t help myself. I can confidently say that fall is probably the most favorite season to many people. I love everything about it; I have so many family memories during that time of year that I’ll never forget. Every October, my family and I would take trips to Deerfield, MA to go to the Yankee Candle Village, where my mom would stock up on Autumn Wreath and Balsam and Cedar. Now whenever I go there there’s a sense of fall and of something familiar.

Along with one’s own personal experience with the season, there are always reasons that people can agree with. Like for instance: the foliage. I’ve lived in Massachusetts my whole life, and no other place does fall better than New England. The leave turn into beautiful colors that it doesn’t matter if you live in the city, small town, and somewhere completely different. If there’s a tree with some orange leaves on, it’s picturesque.

Now I have to bring something up that is a classic, and one that some people may judge me on: pumpkin. I love everything pumpkin. Pumpkin pie, coffee, bread, cake, candles, you name it, I’ll enjoy it. When Dunkin Donuts announces that their pumpkin flavored coffee is coming back, my heart skipped a beat because it’s THAT good. Call me a “common white girl” all you want, but I can’t help love something that taste so good. And it’s not just the flavor, its pumpkins themselves. I used to carve them with my dad when I was a kid, and even he ended up doing all of the work (sorry dad), it’s was still fun. My mom would line out front steps with pumpkins ranging in size, and once I was off to college, I found myself decorating my room with the festive food.

This is a great segway to my favorite fruit: apples. Even though apples are good all year round, they’re ten times better in the fall. Apple picking is an activity that you just have to do in the fall, it’s fun for everyone and can be so cheap at certain places. Apple is pie is probably my favorite kind, and just like with pumpkins, I’ll eat anything that has it in it. The apple orchard in my hometown is always fun to go too; they have a huge general store, hay rides, a playground, bands, and even local venders come to sell some food. Every orchard has something distinct and different that make them their own.

Breaking out my cozy sweaters, warm scarves, and comfy boots are another thing I love about the season. I hate the heat and wearing shorts, so being able to bundle up as I walk to call is such a nice feeling for me. There’s always a cool breeze coming through the air, so being able to put on a light jacket is simple, and know that the weather is perfect, because you’re not too hot, but you’re also not too cold. In New England, Bean Boots are a statement during fall, and although I don’t have a pair of my own, a girl can dream to make her fall wardrobe perfection.

So bring on September, October, and the rest of the year, because when this weather finally arrives for good, I’m going to be ready.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
