5 reasons not to mourn summer's ending

The school year is in full swing and the season of fall is quickly approaching. It seems that more and more people everyday begin to mourn the ending of summer. This is understandable, summer is the life of the season party. No school, hot weather perfect for outdoor fun, more hours of daylight, the list can go on and on. However, nobody should be too sad just yet. While winter may bring with it dreary weather and other blues, that’s still a few months away. Before that, we go into fall, which is the best season there is. You’re probably thinking “Better than summer?” Yes. Fall is truly the best season and here’s why.

1. Cooler, but bearable, temperatures.

Summer weather can be pretty great. You don’t have to wear seven layers of bulky clothes, you can go swimming, and cooling down can be a perfect excuse to eat ice cream everyday. However, sometimes the heat becomes unbearable. If it gets too hot, you don’t want to do anything and simple daily processes can become a chore. In the fall, however, outdoor activities become more bearable because the weather is no longer sweltering hot, all the while still, not bone-chillingly cold. Cooler weather is also beneficial because it allows you to break out all of those super comfy, cute sweaters.

2. Bonfires

Bonfires are a hugely popular summer evening activity. However, they can be even better in the fall. Fall nights can get chilly and what better way to warm up than calling up some friends and having some fun around a cozy fire? It’s also like a little slice of summer that carries over to ease any sadness about it’s passing.

3. Halloween and Thanksgiving

Two of the best holidays are also part of this season. Halloween might seem like a children’s holiday, but it can still be enjoyable for adults. The streets are filled with awesomely eerie decorations that spice things up from your normal everyday life. Haunted attractions can provide a fun. friendly scare and even getting dressed up to scare your friends or even go to a costume party can be fun too. Also, who doesn’t love an excuse to eat lots of tasty treats? And let’s not forget Thanksgiving being a great time to not only overload on delicious foods but also remind us to be happy with and thankful for what we have.

4. Pumpkins!

Pumpkins are great for having fun carving and decorating. Whether you want to do something cute and fun or scary, it can always be fun being creative with pumpkins. Not only that but pumpkin seeds are delicious, and most importantly, who doesn’t love pumpkin spiced treats?

So, over the next couple of weeks, enjoy the last of the summer season as best as you can. Just don’t feel too bummed that summer is over when fall is completely advantageous as well. It can be such a beautiful, cozy time filled with yummy treats and lots of fun activities.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
