Being a huge fan of film, Oscar season is always my favorite time of year. I love the thrill of seeing the nominated films and making my bets on what awards the movies are going to win. My dream has always been to be an actress, so watching these films inspires and energizes me, and makes me feel like my passion is an achievable one.
However the movies I have always enjoyed the most are the musical ones. I grew up in a musical family, and we all appreciated music and the arts and incorporated into our daily lives. Family outings were spent at the theatre or local concerts, and we almost always had music playing in our house. Because of this, I became attracted to movie musicals at a young age. Singing In The Rain, Grease and West Side Story were my favorite films, and I always became elated when finding out that a movie musical was coming to the big screen.
Saying this, I was beyond excited when I heard that a movie was coming out called La La Land, an original musical made for the screen. A lot of my peers did not expect much from the film, but I had a feeling that I would love it from the time I saw the first commercial. I was right. This movie is one I cannot recommend enough. It beautifully describes the struggles of the acting and the music industry in a real, compelling way. The characters, played by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are flawed, but likable and relatable, and they have a great chemistry together that is seen throughout the duration of the film. The movie is gripping, I was on the edge of my seat from the first scene, mesmerized with the music, colorful scenes, and electric performances.
All of these aspects of the film were amazing, but my favorite part of the film was how it made me feel. This film had the rare ability to allow me to escape from the world I was living in, while feeling emotions that are very real in every day life. This movie had a focus on the irony of dreams and sacrificing people for your passion. It was a movie that focused on relentless, stubborn, and determined characters who had a strong passion for the arts, and wanted to share their passions with others. Sometimes, creative people get the short end of the stick, and this movie emphasized how important it is to keep dreaming. It filled me with inspiration, and made me want to live a life surrounded by creativity and art. Hollywood needs to make more movies like this one. The beautiful sets, likable characters, and captivating story is a beautiful one, and I recommend for people to see it while they can in theaters.
