Fall Is Coming, Here Are 4 Reasons I Won't Apologize For Being Basic

In This Article:

Fall is my favorite time of the year. The temperature isn't too cold yet, and I'm no longer sweating on my way to class. Also, let's not forget it's pumpkin spice season. Fall is home to some of the most fun activities as well. So even though I may be incredibly basic this coming fall, I don't care what you think of me because I'm enjoying myself immensely.

I think we can all agree that one of the best parts about fall is the temperature.

If you live in Indiana, you might not experience true fall weather until "winter" is supposed to be hitting, but when you do get that weather, there's nothing better than curling up in a sweater with a nice mug of apple cider. Also, it's a super big bonus because if you happen to be a science major like me, you don't have to change from shorts to pants before you get to lab :).

… And besides the AMAZING sweater weather, pumpkins are flying out of every direction!

If you're not a huge fan of pumpkin, fall is probably not your favorite season. But you know who has two thumbs and loves pumpkin almost as much as her mom?

Pumpkin muffins, pumpkin chai lattes, pumpkin carving, pumpkin bread. You name it, I will be thoroughly enjoying it (notice that I didn't include pumpkin spice lattes because, unpopular opinion, pumpkin doesn't belong in coffee). Maybe part of the reason I love pumpkin so much is because it also happens to be my body shape, but honestly, I couldn't care less during this season.

Also, let's not forget about all of the cute pictures you can now take with your friends.

Did you say going to an apple orchard and taking pictures with the people I love most while wearing comfy clothes with the added aesthetic of the turning leaves? Uh yes, please. The sorority girl in me is screaming and shouting for joy. If you ever want someone to go do some cute fall activity with you and take pictures, I'm your gal. I will literally drop my pumpkin muffin to join you. I mean, sure, your friends were cute in summer too, but now you can be cute in scarves.

If you love fall and all of its accompaniment as much as I do, you're probably going to get a lot of flak this season. You'll be called a basic white girl before you can even put down your Starbucks cup, but let's face it, you love being basic. Truly, I think fall is the most amazing season no matter how basic I end up being. It's full of vibrant colors, crisp air, and lots of breaks at school that you can spend with your family and friends. So maybe you want to make fun of me for wearing flannel and leggings every day, but I think you're the one who's really missing out. I mean, if you can't beat 'em, why not just join 'em?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
