What Fall In The South Means To Me

Fall didn't always mean the way it does to me now

Fall isn't just the return of pumpkin spice everything, it's a lot more than that. Some of my favorite memories were made in the fall and I know I'm not the only one who can say that. Anyone that loves fall as much as I do knows that fall is more than a season.

When I was younger August was just the beginning of a new school year, nothing too out of the ordinary. As I grew up and entered high school, I started attending football games and I began a love affair in summer with fall. By the time I was a junior and senior, I was loyal only to fall, leaving summer and it's suffocating heat in the past.

Friday nights were for football and late-night waffle house trips with friends. There was nothing like finishing a big win with the student section singing the alma mater. Saturdays during high school were for track meets, spending the entire day outside and trying to find shade between my events and my friend's events.

When I started college, I was fully committed to falling, and our love became stronger than any other. Saturdays became game days and halftime shows had me feeling chills and wiping tears. There isn't a prouder moment than cheering on friends who put their all on that field.

Fall loves to show off, the sunsets become more vibrant and breathtaking, and leaves reveal the colors they've been hiding all year. However, I certainly don't mind, watching the sunset with friends is one of my favorite pass times, plus, if you didn't take a picture, did it really happen?

Days get shorter and the air gets cooler, fires start being built, and everyone seems to get a little closer. There is always something to look forward to. If it isn't football season, its Halloween, if not Halloween, then thanksgiving. Before we even know it, it's Christmas time, but that's a whole different love story. Enjoy what's going on around you, because before you know it, they're just memories.

I can't wait to fall even more in love with fall.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
