Fall On The Eastern Shore Looks Like This

It's the most wonderful time of the year -- fall. Labor day has passed and the first official day of fall finally arrived this past week. When you think about fall, you probably think of the typical things: cooler weather, football, bonfires, and the leaves changing. I think of those things too, but here's the thing. I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Things are different here.

We're known for lots of awesome things on the Eastern Shore. Crabs, beaches, and having ridiculous fall and spring weather.

Now that fall is here, I just wanted to share some things about the way fall works here on the shore. If you live here or even if you're just visiting, here are some things to look for:

1. Bipolar Weather.

It doesn't just gradually get cooler. It's either 90 degrees or 60 degrees. Last week was 90 degrees. This week will be 60 degrees. And next week will probably be 90 degrees again. I just can't take the inconsistency.

2. Flannel.

Every girl is wearing flannel. It's either tired around her waist or she's actually wearing it. But every single shirt goes with a flannel. It's girl code for fall.

3. Sunfest.

AKA the weekend where all of the old people travel to Ocean City to celebrate that summer is ending and seasonal businesses get one last crazy night. Awesome.

4. Facebook Updates.

When the weather decides to not be 90 degrees, it seems like everyone is posting about it on Facebook. Because fall is finally here and everybody loves fall. But then that 90 degree day comes back and people are still posting on Facebook that it's fall and the weather is not reflecting that. How dare it. But then when it gets down to 60 degrees people are upset that it's cold. You can't win here.

5. Leggings and Combat boots.

It's the most basic outfit ever but don't even lie, it's the most comfortable thing you'll ever wear. Bonus points: throw in a flannel and something Pumpkin Spice Flavored. You win.

6. Couple Photos at the Pumpkin Patch.

This is the cutest thing ever. I haven't found someone to do this with, but I'll keep you updated. In the meantime, I'll keep acting annoyed at the ones I do see.

goals.

7. Bonfires at Assateague.

Assateague is a national park that runs from Maryland to Virginia and is known for its wild horses. It's a tourist attraction in the summer but locals love it in the fall because it's really the best place for a bonfire.

8. Winter.

Because after fall comes winter. But nobody seems to realize that here because fall is too exciting. And there is always that chance that it will snow in October. Seriously, you never know here.

There is way more to list, but we'd be here for years. Next time you're on the Eastern Shore, keep these tips in mind so you can fit in and be just as basic as the rest of us. Happy fall!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
