Fall Brings Out The Basic Girl n Me

My kitchen is stocked with pumpkin spice everything, my Starbucks app is loaded and ready to go for my PSL's, and my summer clothes are packed away while my fall clothes are here to stay.

I have to say, I don't consider myself to be the picture perfect, Pinterest "basic girl". I also have to say that the "basic girl" in me creeps out when mid- September comes around and stays until the Christmas season (and from there a whole new Christmas obsession takes over). Reflecting on my love for all things fall, orange, and pumpkin spice, I know for a fact I am not the only one on this boat enjoying the best 3 months of the year. Of all things I love, these few things bring out the basic in me —and don't lie — they bring out the basic in you too and you KNOW it.

1. Starbucks' monumental announcement of the PSL making its way back onto the menu

I am that girl. I embrace the 5-pound weight gain solely from the almost daily pumpkin spice latte run that drains my pockets by the end of November. As the barista hands me my first PSL of the year, I get the same jitters I used to get at five years old running to see what Santa had delivered on Christmas morning.

2. Pumpkin spice everything. I mean everything

Every year, companies put pumpkin spice into foods and products that I never imagined could cross that line. Pumpkin spice cheerios, donuts, car fresheners, oatmeal, even yogurt and laundry detergent. You name it, if it has anything to do with pumpkin spice latte, it has my sale.

3. Fall Clothes

I find myself getting more and more frustrated as the days pass on and it is the last week of September with 80+ degree weather. I have had my fun from May - September with summer clothes, I'm over it. I'm ready for the puffy vests, leggings, sweaters and knee high boots. My impatience for the fall weather often gets the best of my and I end up being that girl walking around town with jeans, boots and a sweater on while it is sunny and 82 degrees.

4. Pumpkin patches

I could spend every Saturday of October at a pumpkin patch. My inner child comes out in me and I take advantage of every activity and hayrack ride there is to offer. Diving into corn pools and sliding down slides on hay-sacks with a blanket scarf around my neck sounds better than a day of shopping at the Mall of America.

5. The trees

I don't care if you are a girl or a guy; this is something that everyone who gets to experience fall in the Midwest loves. The old neighborhoods and parks lined with different trees make me feel like I am in a Hallmark movie. The crisp temperature and the diverse color scheme of leaves piling onto the ground overwhelm me with my love for fall.

Fall is here, and my excitement is hitting an all time high. My kitchen is stocked with pumpkin spice everything, my Starbucks app is loaded and ready to go for my PSL's, and my summer clothes are packed away while my fall clothes are here to stay. Let the fun begin.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
