Doctor Who has been one of my favorite TV shows for two years now. I’ve been watching it with my boyfriend since before we started dating. I’m excited about the new season coming to TV this April. And there are some things I know about Doctor Who that many may not know, even if you do call yourself a die-hard fan.
So, here are some facts about Doctor Who that many people don’t know.
1. Doctor Who has been around for over 50 years
Doctor Who has been on TV since 1963, but the show ended in 1989. That’s the classic series though. It came back as a movie in 1996, and I heard that it wasn’t as good as the actual series. In 2005, Doctor Who came back as a TV show again, and it has been successful ever since.
2. The main characters are not ALWAYS the same
One main character, The Doctor, only changes when he regenerates. Regeneration is when the Doctor dies and changes into a different person by a fatal injury or old age. That’s how he is played by different actors. His companions also change, but they’re different characters to travel with him. His companions usually travel with The Doctor by choice or accidental.
3. Doctor Who Enemies
In every episode of Doctor Who, the Doctor and his companions face different enemies. For example, one of the Doctor Who enemies is the Daleks. The only way I can describe what the Daleks are is, they’re R2-D2’s (from Star Wars) evil twin that got deformed in a nuclear explosion in both mind and body. Another Doctor Who enemy is the Cybermen. The Cybermen are humanoid cyborgs who think that perfection is defined as everyone needs to look, act, and think the same with no emotions. The scariest Doctor Who enemy of all is the Weeping Angels. To tell you the truth, I had nightmares about the Weeping Angels, and here’s why. If you look at the Weeping Angels, you can’t blink or look away because they are so fast without you noticing. The Weeping Angels send you back in time, and you would end up dead in the present time. The Weeping Angels were introduced in 2007 in the episode “Blink” of the third series.
4. Places that The Doctor and his companions travel to
The Doctor and his companions travel in time and space. When they travel in space, the Doctor and his companions travel to a planet or some places in history. Sometimes they’ll run into historical figures like William Shakespeare, Winston Churchill, and Vincent van Gogh.
5. Harry Potter stars that appeared on Doctor Who
Some people might not know that some of the Harry Potter stars actually appeared in Doctor Who. Zoe Wanamaker as known as Madam Hooch was the first Harry Potter star to appear in Doctor Who. She plays a character named Cassandra in the show. David Tennant might be obvious because not only was he Barty Crouch Jr., but he was also the Tenth Doctor on Doctor Who. Other Harry Potter stars like Shirley Henderson, Roger Lloyd-Pack, Jessica Hynes, Helen McCrory, Toby Jones, Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, Mark Williams, David Bradley, and John Hurt appeared in Doctor Who.
Doctor Who is a fun and adventurous show with many twists and turns. I hope I can continue to watch this show with my boyfriend when we’re married, and eventually, we would watch it with our kids. I can't wait to see who will be The Doctor and his companions in this season and future to come.
