10 Facts Science Majors Wish Everyone Understood

No, I’m a product of Albert Einstein.

1. I'm not a genius

While my professors might be, studying science does not mean that I'm a product of Albert Einstein. My brain works differently than yours but please stop acting like I know every answer to every question you ask me. I have to study a lot to get good grades.

2. Some of us like other subjects, too.

Science majors aren't limited to specifically science. Just as math majors aren't limited to math and so on. Personally, I enjoy my English classes and look forward to my low maintenance art class. While I love science, it's refreshing for some diversity.

3. We don’t think any less of your major

There is a stigma that all science majors think that their major is the hardest. Truthfully, I think being a business major or even some sort of marketing would be difficult. Everyone learns differently. This is totally fine

4. Honestly, I don’t know what’s going on either

I’ve gotten through science classes by understanding the material, but much like many other majors, it requires time and effort outside of the classroom. Don’t be ashamed to hire a tutor or seek help with your professor. The harder you try, the better you’ll do.

5. No, I don’t live in the Science building

Valid question, but no. I actually do have a dorm room with a bed that I sleep in occasionally.

6. Yes, I’ve cried over chemistry

Many, many times. Science can be frustrating, and it can seem impossible. The amount of times I’ve almost tossed my work across the room due to confusion isn’t recordable.

7. Science labs make me question my major

Labs are probably the most difficult part of science. There are so many calculations and steps to ensure your experiment goes correctly, and even the smallest mistake can lead to restarting your test.

8. I’m surrounded by intelligence

In high school, it was easier to get good grades and maintain a solid GPA. Now, everyone around me is just as intelligent and a lot are incredibly smarter. At first, this made me question if I was meant to be in the science department. It was hard to accept that everyone around me was here for the exact same reason and really gave me a huge reality check.

9. Science is diverse

Science majors aren't all here to work the same jobs. Don't assume that just because we take the same classes means we like the same things. There are so many different sciences that some love and others hate. Science leads to hundreds of different jobs including doctors, nurses, therapists, teachers, chemists, researchers and so many other jobs.

10. I love science

Regardless of the frustration, confusion and tears, I love my major. Sometimes I question what I’m doing, but then I realize I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I’m sure all science majors can agree.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
