October 28 is National Chocolate Day, one of my personal favorites. Here are 10 super yummy facts about chocolate:
1. White chocolate isn't actually a chocolate.
White 'chocolate' is actually a chocolate derivative, and is commonly made from cocoa butter, sugar and milk solids. A disgrace!
2. The Mayans' had a deity dedicated to cocoa.
Ek Chuaj is the Mayan patron of cocoa, and since the Mayans often used cocoa as a currency, they held this deity in pretty high regards.
3. Nazis tried to assassinate Winston Churchill with chocolate
German Nazi's had planned to send an exploding chocolate bar to Winston Churchill. While it didn't work out, that's would have been a crazy way to go!
4. The creator of chocolate chip cookies sold the idea for a life-time supply of chocolate.
5. M&Ms were created for soldiers.
M&Ms were originally made as a 'non-melting' candy for soldiers during the Spanish Civil War.
6. Three Musketeers originally had three flavours.
Three Musketeers got its name from its three original flavours: chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. They stopped producing the three flavours when the prices of strawberries rose.
7. Dark chocolate can have the same amount of caffeine as Coca-Cola.
Coca-Cola has 39 mg of caffeine in a single can, and a single dark chocolate bar can have up to 70 mg of caffeine!
8. Nutella was made during World War II as a cheap chocolate alternative.
And it was originally called Supercrema!
9. Chocolate can help with a cough better than a lot of cough syrups!
A cough got you down? Forget the over-the-counter syrups and get yourself a chocolate bar! Chocolate has Theobromine in it, which has been proven to calm better than the Codeine that cough syrups have!
10. Napoleon LOVED chocolate!
It's said that Napoleon always requested chocolate be served to him, even during battles!
