In a world where social media is so prominent, we are bound to create new things and be wonderstruck by them. Facebook was created in 2004, and just two short years later Twitter was launched. Following that in 2012, Instagram found it's way into social media, and these three platforms have taken over since then. But some argue that Facebook is not as prominent anymore. They say, "Facebook is the new MySpace, it's dying!"
I beg to differ.
I would say no, Facebook is not dying. Rather, it is transforming along with all social media platforms. Years ago, people used Facebook to post personal statuses, but now it is becoming a social media platform that you use to share news articles and viral videos and articles, such as those from Odyssey. Facebook has grown and expanded from the Zuckerberg days. So sure, you may post the occasional pictures to update your family with big life events, but you see more people using social media platforms for content consumption now than ever.
For example, when companies are advertising their brands, they will put their social media handles on their cards and tell you to follow them to keep up to date on events happening and sales. Instagram is a great way companies market themselves. They can bring you exciting brand news with a tap of the finger, and can catch your eye while scrolling through feeds. Even clubs around your college campus will post pictures for people to see what the inside scoop is.
Also, Twitter is a place to get your news depending on who you follow. You can follow news stations and get notifications every time that they post, and that way you can always be in the know about what's going on around the world. You can also hear personally from celebrities about what they are feeling and what they are up to on these platforms. Both of these platforms have transformed from places for people to publish their meaningless thoughts into hubs for all kinds of content, just like Facebook has.
With the transformation of these social media platforms, wouldn't people want nothing to do with them? No, people want to be in touch with them even more, which is why companies are reaching out to our generation and the generations below us. We are all constantly on our phones. There is no doubt about it. So, these companies are marketing their latest and greatest gadgets straight to the palms of the consumers. News stations are making articles mobile-friendly and easy to access. Reaching to us and the newer generations is exactly what they want to do, and what they should do. We are constantly chomping at the bit for more and more content of all kinds. We are going to be the ones wanting to purchase new things. And they are reaching us in the best way possible.
Next time your friend questions why you have Facebook, shoot back that it is a great way to stay up to date on nearly everything all around the world. With the world at your fingertips, the possibilities are endless.
