Everyone should consider using the flag filter.

Why The Facebook Pride Is Important

As we all know, getting out of bed is not always an easy task. I myself require some mild yoga and a pep talk before the process is complete. Most days, I even have to check out Tumblr and/or Twitter before I'm ready to take on leaving my bed. It's ritual, just an everyday scenario. So the morning I woke to see the words "Same-Sex Marriage Nationally Legalized," I was not just ready to take on the day, but more like ... ready to take on my generation and ready to truly be proud to call myself an American.

As I'm sure you've noticed, the U.S. has not always been the best at embracing change. Despite our fundamental and constitutional principles, we have wronged just about every race, religion, sexual orientation that exists. Our country has done plenty of good over the years, of course, in some aspects of domestic and foreign policy. But really, every American should know not to be so quick to believe everything that their grade school history textbooks have told them. Being black in America, being a Native American in America, being gay or transgender, being anything but a heterosexual white male, is simply not covered. (Still irrelevant, Rachel Dolezal.) But seriously, Stonewall, anybody? The list of omissions goes on so far that to name every one that occurred as a direct result of the Great American Hypocrisy would be an entire article in itself.

So, being able to wake up and see those words, to know that now my friends, members of my family and my church will be able to marry the ones they love and for it to be legally recognized? I'm telling you, I thought for a solid half an hour that I must have dreamt this up.

But it's really happening! The United States Supreme Court has finally admitted to us, to those who have been waiting for this miracle, for the day when love is not treated as a delicacy only intended for those born with a certain entitlement, but instead as an entitlement universal to all. Seeing those words truly made me feel proud to be an American. To live in a country, that although it has made its fair share of mistakes, can admit to them and move forward, makes me feel justly treated.

Although its been such a slow process, this country has elected its first black president, has petitioned the confederate flag and torn it down, and Hillary Rodham Clinton is running for the executive office again in 2016. And we, as Americans, finally have the right to our own natural birth-rights. My cousin can have the same legal benefits (i.e. life insurance options or financial aid) with her wife that any heterosexual couple would have without issue. My best friend will, one day, be able to adopt his children with the love of his life.

For all of those people out there who have or still continue to fight this, I want to say to you, "What is love, and what gives you the right to define it?" To the pastor who says it is unnatural for a man to love another man or a woman another woman, I say to you, "God is love, and who are you to judge for him and interpret on his behalf?" Every man, every woman, every person shall be the one who knows what's best for them. And no one, ever, should ever be able to take that birth-right away from them. No one. Preaching words of hate is an act of terrorism as it hurts everyone on our homefront. No one out there, not even on social media, can take this victory away from us. That's just some good domestic and foreign policy for you.

Which makes me have to ask, have you seen the new Facebook filter for your profile picture? The pride flag I mean, because I know you have. Have you thought about using the filter for your own profile picture? If you have, then I'm grateful, but if you haven't yet I'm assuming it's because either you don't realize its value or because you're anti-human rights.

Do change it, don't change it, do whatever it is that you are entitled to do through your right of freedom of speech and freedom of expression, but do at least consider why it is that you have or have not done it yet. Because you have to remember, this is the New World, and you're just living in it. And as for me, I can get out of bed for that!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
