Don’t like Trump? Lots of people don’t. Think we need to reform welfare? Okay. The education system is broken? Yes. Laws are dumb? People are wrong? Everything in the world is against you?

Okay. I hear you. I’ve heard you for years, and nothing has changed. Now, I’m done listening.

Stop complaining, get off your ass, and start doing something.

Scrolling through Facebook, as many do, political post after ranting news post fills my newsfeed. People share articles and caption “Something’s got to change” or “I hate Trump.”

We get it, you’re a keyboard warrior and a weak one at that.

Nothing is wrong with wanting change or disliking the president. I want change and I don’t always agree with the man running our country. But you know what? I do something about it. There are things you could be doing, too.

First of all, inform yourself. Stop reading clickbait and get out in the world. Disagree with something going on in your town? Go to a City Hall meeting. Talk to people who are knowledgeable. Learn about the issue you are concerned about. No one is going to listen to you if you fight like a toddler, insisting you’re right with no solid ground.

Next, start small. Now that you’re informed, know the issues you care about and understand your rights, you should take the first steps of activism. Vote.

As an American Citizen, it is your responsibility to vote. Whether it’s for your local Sherriff or the next President, voting is the very first thing you should be doing. Didn’t vote in the last presidential election? I don’t want to hear any complaints about the President from you. Someone who does not exercise their rights to make a difference has no room to complain about the results of themselves (as well as those with the same mindset as them) being inactive.

Alright, serial faux news sharer. You’re now informed, and you’re now a voter. What’s next? Let’s step up and start working towards making a difference in what you are passionate about.

So you really hate the welfare system? Stop complaining and start brainstorming. Come up with a better plan. Pitch it to your state representatives or someone who knows more about what you’re trying to change.

Think your wage is too low? Participate in a peaceful protest. Work your way up the ladder. Get people on your team.

Think your public schools should make a change? Most schools host a monthly school board meeting, open to the public. Go. Know your numbers, find those reliable facts. Come up with a better plan.

Your voice does matter, and it will be heard if you want it to be.

But, you cannot make a difference sitting on your couch and complaining on social media.

If you’re complaining, I want to see you doing something to make a change. Make your anger and frustration work for the world.

Get informed. Start small. Write to your representatives. Make time. Stop being children and start pushing for a better world. The world needs more activists, get off your ass and start making a difference.

College is filled with many things, and we're so often lectured to make the right decisions as we head out on our own into the college life. But sometimes it's necessary to indulge in some guilty pleasures as well as just doing things because you can. And honestly, a lot of the time it's inevitable. College is no piece of cake that's for sure, so it's okay to do some things you deep down know you shouldn't....once in a while anyways.
