An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. Drones have been used by the military for a long time in the past. However, of late, personal drones have become a popular trend. The increase in these "toy drones" has become so serious that the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) made it mandatory for all drones to be registered online with the owner's name, address and a small five dollar fee. Those who do not register their airborne vehicles may face charges up to $250,000 if a criminal offense is violated.
With Super Bowl 50 on the horizon between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, the FAA has increased the rules regarding drones. Although there is already a drone ban on any event with an attendance over 30,000 people, the Super Bowl has pushed those measures to the limit as a 30 nautical mile zone around Levi Stadium is now a "drone-free area." The area covers most of the San-Francisco Bay Area including the Oakland area.
The ban begins on Feb. 7, 2016, at 2 p.m. and continues to midnight. If you violate the ban and are caught, you could face a fine of $1,000 if you are recording for yourself. However, if you are caught using a drone and recording for a business, the fines increase significantly to possible arrest and a $27,500 fine. "Deadly Force" towards the drones is also allowed during this time.
Many drone users have tried to fight back against the ban and believe the 30 mile boundary is way too big and unnecessary. The arguments have yet to be addressed by the FAA.
