Mills College is blessed to be located in the vibrant and beautiful city of Oakland, California! As we prepare to return to school for the coming year, I wanted to make a list of places to explore for those both new and familiar to the town. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, if you have some time on a weekend, I highly recommend eating and exploring your way through the city, possibly starting with some of the things on this list!
1. Friday Nights at Oakland Museum of California (OMCA)
From 5-10 p.m. every Friday night, the Oakland Museum of California offers half price gallery admission and hosts over 20 food trucks, live music and dancing. This is a wonderful place to be immersed in Oakland's dynamic community! There is an excellent nuanced exhibit about marijuana in California right now that I highly recommend everyone check out.
2. Tacos el Gordo
If you ever need a late night snack, head over to the Tacos El Gordo truck on 42nd and International. They're usually there from about 6 p.m. - 3 a.m., and the tacos are unbelievably good -- so good I'm not even sure I want to give away this Oakland secret!
3. Gerardo's in the Laurel
Speaking of tacos, Gerardo's Taqueria in the Laurel District is another absolute must try. They have created a deep-fried taco that is an incredible explosion of sensations -- the crispy outer shell and hot, tender meat juxtaposed against the chill of sour cream, guacamole, jalapeños, pico de gallo, cheese and cilantro is a delightful mess.
4. Lake Merritt
Of course, no list of things to do in Oakland would be complete without including Lake Merritt. A beautiful 3.4 mile walk around the lake reveals amazing architecture, character and diversity. Surrounding the lake walk are a bird sanctuary, Children's Fairyland and multiple parks that are fun for everyone. Be sure to make a stop at Lakeshore to shop at Urban Indigo and eat delicious pizza at Arizmendi or try Cuban cuisine at Caña.
5. Tierra Mia
As you're walking around lovely Oakland, coffee is an absolute must. Tierra Mia, located in Downtown Oakland underneath the I.Magnin building, makes a great cubano con leche that will really wake you up!
6. The Hive
But stopping for coffee once isn't enough! Located very close to Mills College is The Hive: The Place to Bee in the Laurel District. A bright, fun coffeehouse with a great atmosphere, The Hive is a great place to study.
7. Forge Pizza in Jack London Square
For classy pizza with a fabulous view, stop into Forge Pizza in Jack London Square. The pizza is always delicious and the view of the marina at sunset is unbeatable.
8. Oakland Chinatown! Specifically Spices!3
No city is complete without a Chinatown, and Oakland's is full of some of the most authentic flavors I've ever encountered outside of mainland China. Spices!3 in particular is a gem that will clear out any sinus infection you have with their fiery blend of chili and spices from Szechuan. Walk the beautiful streets and admire the street art around this area as well.
9. Laurel Bookstore
Laurel Bookstore recently moved from the Laurel District to Downtown's historic Lionel J. Wilson building, and it is a treat. They frequently host author talks and readings, and have a wonderful selection of books.
10. Skyline Blvd in the evening
If you're looking for a spectacular view of the Bay, search no further than Skyline Blvd. This excursion will require a car for best results, so find a friend with a car, grab some donuts from 24 hour Colonial Donuts, and drive the winding way up to Skyline Blvd. Once you're up on the ridge, park anywhere that won't get you towed and eat your donuts while enjoying the beautiful lights of the Bay!
11. The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse
Created by teachers in the East Bay, the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse is a wonderful community resource. If you're searching for art, craft supplies, old records, miscellaneous furniture and board games with mismatched pieces, this is the place for you. Who needs Michael's when you have a community resource that benefits teachers??
12. Saturday Farmer's Market at Lake Merritt
The Grand Lake Farmer's Market near the shore of Lake Merritt is another event that cannot be missed. From 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. the community gathers to shop, eat, talk, laugh and dance by the white tents of the vendors and the wall of food trucks. With everything from fruit to falafel, the Farmer's Market is a wonderful experience that will leaving you full in heart, soul and stomach.
And these twelve gems are just a few of the diverse and incredible places and events to explore in Oakland, California! With our many lovely sunny days and wonderful local communities, I highly recommend you get out there and enjoy the richness of our surrounding city. What are some places I missed that definitely would have made your list?
