Christmas in College

Even Finals Can't Put a Damper on the Holiday Season

Christmas in College

"It's the most wonderful time of the year!" This famed line sung by Grammy nominated singer Andy Williams was probably repeated by thousands of college students after they completed their final exams.

Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love the spirit of joy and happiness that surrounds everyone, the classic Christmas Carols, the delicious food, and of course the presents. Most importantly, I love how during the Christmas season, everyone comes home to be with friends and family.

As a kid, I loved coming home from school and watching the 25 Days of Christmas on ABC Family (now Freeform). Seeing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Tim Allen's Santa Clause trilogy, and all the other Christmas specials were one of the highlights of my year.

As a college student, Christmas is still one of my favorite holidays, but things are a bit different. The month of December used to last for an eternity when I was a kid, but now due to busy schedules, work, and the dreaded Finals Week, the time for celebrating Christmas has been drastically cut short. As much as I want to just sit around, blast Christmas music, eat cookies, and ignore all of my responsibilities, I know that I have to keep working. On the plus side, there are some fun Christmas parties ( a lot of great eggnog) and seeing campus covered in Christmas decorations adds to the holiday festivities.

When Winter Break finally does come I will definitely take advantage of the time I have. I will especially enjoy my time with my family and hometown friends after being gone for so long. Christmas in college is different in that you are now enjoying Christmas from the perspective of a young adult as opposed to as a child. You enjoy similar things that you did in your youth, but at the same time you appreciate different ideals that didn't even occur to you as a kid.

Hopefully everyone can enjoy the holiday season and take advantage of the time spent with family and friends. Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
