Experiences Shape Us Into The People We Are

We need experiences.

A lot of times, we value material wealth over experiences and memories. I too am guilty to wanting the latest handbag, the new iPhone and any other shiny thing that everyone seems to be purchasing right now. However, these aren't always the most important things. Life is short and every moment is a gift, so why not enjoy the experiences we get while we can?

Experiences can range from concerts, to movie nights with friends to quiet dinners with grandparents. As we are taking in the present with the people we love, we are creating memories that last a lifetime. While that new iPhone X is awesome while it lasts, it won't give you the memories you can get with family and friends. Though, it will give you amazing photos you can cherish.

Sometimes we choose friends over family and "fun" over quiet nights with our elderly grandparents. While I love my friends and having fun, sometimes those quiet nights with grandparents, aunts, uncles and even parents are important too. People won't be around forever and it's important to enjoy them and squeeze them tight while we still can. If we turn away from these types of experiences, we may regret it a few years down the road when these people aren't with us anymore.

Balance is definitely key in approaching what experiences we choose to have and those we choose to give up. Family time is important so we can recharge and spend time with the ones we love. Family includes the friends that are like family and the people in our lives who have always been there and shape who we are. These people are our personal board of directors, that hold us accountable and provide us counsel. This is why we need them close always, because they are and will always be in our corners.

While the new dress with the cute new shoes will not give you advice or console you when you are sad, you should still treat yourself and buy nice things when you want too. The key is to not let the material wealth overshadow your experiences with loved ones and what you value.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
