My Experience With Alpharetta’s FBLA Has Impacted My Entire High School Career And Future

FBLA, also known as Future Business Leaders of America, is the largest student organization in Alpharetta High School with over 300 members. FBLA offers many opportunities and allowing them to get a feel for how business works in the real world.

From volunteering to competitive events, there is always something for everyone to do in FBLA. This past year, AHS FBLA members have been able to connect and give back to their community by volunteering for events such as the Atlanta International Night Market and Project Care. Members were also involved in their school community by volunteering at football games and setting up the 9/11 memorial. In fact, this year, AHS FBLA "adopted" a part of the school which they promise to maintain clean. Through these service projects, students can achieve awards and recognition, such as the Community Service Award (CSA).

While students give back to the community, they are also able to explore their potential by competing against each other in events. From public speaking to video production to computer programming, FBLA has it all and allows its competitors to expand their horizons and learn new skills such as networking, presentation skills, soft skills, and more. Competitors can advance through the regional and state levels to nationals where the best of the best can shine. At the national level, the top contestants are even awarded prize money in events sponsored by partnering businesses and universities.

This past year, I got the opportunity to attend the National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas, to compete in Broadcast Journalism. For the people who don't know what Broadcast Journalism, it is a presentation event where you have to mimic a new broadcast. Attending the conference is a huge deal because our team got to compete with others all over the United States. During the conference, I got to be exposed to many new opportunities such as building on my presentational/professional skills through my event and developed numerous connections with FBLA members from all over the country. Not only did I improve my knowledge on the workings of the business world but got to make amazing memories that I will not forget for a lifetime.

I never thought of FBLA of providing me so many great experiences until I joined. I got to attend many conferences, network, and learn from this club. Alpharetta's FBLA has made not only an impact on the community, school but also to each member in the club.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
