Islamophobia is an apparent issue within today's society. Thousands of Muslims are scrutinized for their religion and cultural beliefs. I received the opportunity to hear a young woman named Chyann speak about her experiences with Islamophobia. She is half Muslim and shared her stories about her family and the racism that they have experienced. Even living in Tucson, her family has suffered from prejudices and narrow mindedness.
As she discussed her family’s situation, she mentioned that a Muslim Mosque is often a target of bigotry. She stated that often times college students litter the parking lot with beer cans and debris. They also vandalized the property and damaged the Mosque. I was very surprised to hear about these acts of racism occurring right within our very own community. I was shocked to find out that students from the University of Arizona, my classmates and colleagues, participate in such vile acts.
Chyann went on to talk about the misconceptions that many Americans have towards Muslims. Many Americans associate Muslims with terrorism, and therefore project fear and hate toward Muslims. In reality, Muslims are peaceful and respectful individuals who share many common core beliefs as Christians. Innocent people are being targeted simply by wearing a Hijab or practicing their religion.
I think it is important to educate individuals about religion and culture in order to spread positivity toward all races and religions. I enjoyed the presentation Chyann gave and felt as though it was eye opening and inspiring. I was unaware of the racism that still exists in today's society. I am grateful for this experience and hope to educate more about this important issue.
