Everyone expects certain things in college but they aren't always true.

Everyone expects certain things in college, but some... not so much. Sometimes, students are greeted with realities they were not prepared to face, and they can seriously hinder the student's health, performance, and drive. Sometimes, though, they can be adjusted to pretty easily.

Expectation: Friendly, optimistic atmosphere all the time

College kids are young, in their primes, and making bad choices that will surely make great stories later. Every college movie maybe ever shows happy, excited college students, and yeah, we're happy, just not all the time. The reality is that there are just some days that are worse than others, and that's ok! Some days, getting to class is a struggle. Some days, even getting out of bed is hard. Assure the college student in your life that they're doing fine and that you're proud of them.

Expectation: College kids party. It's in their nature.

When sending a student off to college, many parents worry that their child will become involved with the wrong crowd and go partying all the time. While certainly, some do, not as many as people fear actually go partying. Many college students just stay in and study or use their free time to catch up on some studying or some well-deserved sleep!

Expectation: College kids live on ramen and pizza.

This is true of some of us, yeah, but really, there are usually some nice dining options on campus. Which also serve pizza... and sell ramen... ok, maybe this one is a little true, but when you've got a food you know you like and that's quick to eat, why not stick to it?

Expectation: Straight A's

Straight A's are ideal, yeah, but the likelihood of a first year student getting them? Low. Transitioning to a new place, a new atmosphere, a new routine, new people, and new material is not easy. College is a stressful, stressful time. We just want to sleep.

Expectation: College kids will do anything to get out of doing work.

Whether it means copying and pasting when doing a paper, cheating on a test, or simply not doing assignments, people assume college students are up to no good when it comes to their work. Really, we're putting a lot into our work. Copying and pasting could get us into legal trouble, the consequences of cheating on tests are much higher now, and not doing assignments could mean retaking an awful course. Why would we do that to ourselves?

Expectation: College students have lots of friends!

Yeah, we meet some new cool people and make new friends, but not all of us do it as easily as others. Talking to someone new isn't always easy when you're stressing over and assignment or that exam next week.

In short, college students aren't always portrayed accurately in movies. We're stressed, broke, tired, and a little dead inside, but if you were in our shoes, you probably would be, too.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
