Expectations for Summer Break Versus Reality

Everyone makes that perfect summer bucket list, or has certain expectations for summer break. But, every year some of those dreams will be crushed by the reality of them not being possible. But, it’s still nice to dream. Here are five expectations we all have versus the reality of the situation.

1. Going on vacations every week

There’s so many places to see and summer is the perfect time to explore the world. For a few months, you are completely free of school and it’s time to take full advantage of this opportunity.

Vs.

A new Netflix series every week

In reality, you’ll probably visit most places through your laptop screen within the comfort of your own home while watching Netflix. Once you start to binge watch, it’s impossible to stop.

2. Spending everyday at the beach

What is better than laying out on a beach every day of the summer? Nothing. The beach is the ideal place to spend your summer vacation so obviously you will aim to be there as often as possible.

Vs.

Waking up too late to even bother

But, most likely you will wake up after 11AM. At that point, by the time you get to the beach all the good sun will be gone. So, you’ve wasted the best hours of the day sleeping.

3. Hanging out with friends non-stop

Being home for the summer means that you can spend 24/7 with your friends if you choose too. You can finally see your friends from high school and from your neighborhood and you can even plan some visits to your college friends.

Vs.

Most of your friends spend their days and nights working

But, then reality hits that everyone is trying to make some money during the summer. Making money means work and work means limited openings in their schedule. So, you may find that it’s hard to make plans when you or your friends are working most of the days and nights.

4. Going out with your friends every weekend

Now is the time to enjoy your weekends while you still can. While you’re home you have an entirely different group of people to do crazy things with. Why not taking a trip into the city for a perfect Saturday night?

Vs.

Having absolutely no funds to support these dreams

Well, living large is quite difficult when you are completely broke or trying to conserve money. Any money you are making is probably spent on food or clothes and then the remainder goes into savings. So, having extra left over to go out with is rare.

5. Achieving the perfect tan

The number one goal of the summer is to be tanner than you were the previous summer. So, going to the beach is a great way to achieve that goal, or even sitting in the sun in your backyard if you don’t live near a beach. The last resort option can be going to a tanning place in order to achieve your ideal shade of bronze.

Vs.

Still feeling like winter outside when it's mid-May

Your last resort option might be your only option if every summer begins like this one. It’s freezing out for May, and its upsetting for those of us that hope to sit in the sun and get some color. Hopefully it will warm up soon so that our expectations can match the reality.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
