Earlier this year Getter dropped a new single, Inhalant Abuse, which was a blend of weird and interesting sounds, heavy beats, and stood out as a new chapter for Getter after his What the Frick Tour. Just a few weeks ago we got a VIP of Inhalant Abuse and right after, seemingly out of nowhere, Topi's remix of Inhalant Abuse was released to great success. I got the chance to interview Topi and get the inside look on his music and the process of making his Inhalant Abuse remix.
Topi is a producer from Finland who has been making waves since his release of Bad Language on Monstercat last July. I asked him about how it was working with Monstercat and he enthusiastically replied, "Well that tune was released like a year ago but Monstercat is really dope! I’m glad that they’re so open with their releases these days." Topi has put out plenty of original tracks along with some remixes but one of my personal favorites of Topi's tracks is his flip of Dillon Francis's Candy which you can listen to here.
New sounds have begun to flood Soundcloud and it seems like every artist has their own style and sound, but I wanted to know how Topi defined his style. It started as a journey to discover new sounds in which Topi said, "I was just curious how certain sounds were made in different songs and that way I got interested to try to make those sounds myself. I find it really rewarding when you come up with something fresh."
It is always awesome to hear of producers experimenting with new sounds and styles to expand their arsenal when it comes to making music. Topi said he gets a lot of his inspiration from artists like Noisia, Feed Me, Skrillex, Moody Good, and Kill the Noise, all of which have been pioneers in creating their own styles.
Topi's style has transformed over time but still remains to be defined by traditional genres. "I like to make all types of tunes. I started making super simple industrial house type of stuff then it slowly tipped over to more experimental bass heavy tunes," responded Topi. This change in style carried over to the Inhalant Abuse remix very well and is a great representation of his skill when it comes to working with intricate sounds such as Getter's.
Topi's remix is haunting, unique and absolutely everything I could have wanted from an Inhalant Abuse remix. I asked him how he went about making the remix and I was shocked at his reply.
"There's actually four versions of this remix, all of them quite different.
The first idea was like an 86 bpm hybrid dnb thing with dubstep elements. The second idea was made in the same bpm but it had totally different sounds compared to the first one and the flow was slower. On the third idea, I went back to the original 150 bpm tempo as the original. It’s similar to the final one but the main synth was A LOT simpler and quite. The fourth one is the final which was released on Soundcloud."
In the end, intricacy and experimentation paid off for Topi as the final product is absolutely chilling in all the best ways.
Aside from the music, it was time to talk about the Twitter king himself, Getter. I had to know what it was like working with the man who is infamous for creating dope beats and roasting anyone and everyone on social media.
"We’ve been chatting on Twitter for a while and he seemed to really dig my stuff. I think it was early spring when he told that they were looking for remixes for the 'inhalant abuse' and asked if I could do one."
It was cool to hear that Getter actively searches out new sounds and styles to remix his songs rather than approaching already big names like most other artists do.
On the plus side of the opportunity to remix Inhalant Abuse, Topi commented that, "Getter is a really cool and chill dude. I really appreciate the fact that he asked me to remix one of his tunes!"
While this is a big move in Topi's career I wanted to know what was next and as of right now he is "just trying to make tunes that I enjoy listening to myself. Maybe finally do some sort of EP." While he hasn't had many opportunities to travel the states and perform for American audiences the day he does I will be one of the first to buy a ticket to his show.
Topi just released a new single titled, "Got To Be" on Monstercat as well so go check it out here .
It seems like with the industry nowadays there is a problem with stuck-up artists who create the same beats and press play, feeding cut and paste EDM to the masses. Topi is a down to earth artist who is making a conscious effort to go above and beyond in his pursuit of new sounds. Go follow him on Soundcloud , Twitter , and Facebook for updates on his music, tours, and life in general!
