Why I Am Excited To Move South

Some of my friends have moved south and they wouldn't change it for the world, neither will I.

After I graduate next semester, I am achieving my life-long dream of migrating south. The north has been fun, but I fell in love with the South a long time ago.

Several years ago, I went to the beach after I got home from a deployment. My new friends from deployment taught me how to surf. It was such a liberating feeling and I felt like I conquered the world. The ocean has always been my favorite vacation spot, but then I realized I wanted to be able to do that more often and feel the real ocean sand between my toes. The sound of the waves crashing is irreplaceable by any app or technological advancement.

The next reason I love the south is the people. I love feeling appreciated. People in the south are always waving and going out of their way to be kind to each other. Even in fast food joints, like my favorite Bojangles, people have a happier aura than any fast food place in Illinois. Neighbors go out of their way to get to know each other. They are the kind of people who would lend you some sugar if you were trying to bake some cookies.

The third reason is the weather. The milder climate is nicer than Illinois because there is minimal snow. The ice is occasional because it is warmer there. I prefer hurricane season any day over falling on my butt in the snow or ice or seeing people wreck their cars every time it gets bad in Illinois. I love heat and hate cold. Every time I ask someone what the weather is there I can always bet that it is nicer than Illinois and be right most of the time.

The fourth reason is the mountains. The south also has beautiful mountains you can visit, climb and enjoy more than any Midwestern area I have been to. The views are spectacular and the curves are fun to drive and keep you awake. When I was a kid and my dad drove through the mountains, I thought the coolest part was the tunnels. After you climb a mountain and get to the top, it is a great feeling to see your surroundings, as long as you aren't afraid of heights. It is also good exercise.

The south is great because it is more cost effective than Illinois. The gas is always cheaper than here! I am impressed with how cheap the gasoline is. I wish we had cheap gas in Illinois! Many things are cheaper there than they are here. The cost of living is also less, which makes it more appealing to me.

Another reason I love the south is because it is more friendly to gun supporters than Illinois. You don't have to carry around a FOID card to possess a gun. I think shooting is a fun, recreational thing and those skills can come in handy in self-protection cases down the road.

Lastly, I love the class in the south. In the north, certain places have class but overall, people are a lot classier in the south. People dress up more often and have more etiquette than some northern places.

I am ready to move south this fall because it has more to offer for me and to help me enjoy my life. I can already picture what my life will look like six months down the road for me and I am finally able to let go and have my dreams come true.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
