Why I Am So Excited To Go Home

Don't get me wrong, I love school, but...

Well, it's the end of the semester, and by the time you read this, I will already be home and unpacking all of the stuff I have to bring home. But as of right now, I am so excited to get home! Here are just a few of the reasons.

I am excited to get home because I have not been home since Easter break. While it hasn't actually been that long since being home, it feels almost like a lifetime. While I love having a roommate, I can't wait to get back to my room, to my own space where all of my stuff has a spot to go. The familiarity of being home and around people that will always be there for me is so comforting.

I am also excited because I finally get to see my dog!

He is essentially a very fluffy pillow and I love cuddling with him, even if he gets his fur everywhere. When I say everywhere, I truly mean everywhere. When I'm not home, he uses my room as his bedroom, and I swear the carpet is covered with fur whenever I come home. However, I would never trade that for the excited and yipping dog I see when the car pulls into the driveway.

I am also excited to see my parents and my brother.

Again, I haven't seen them since Easter, but I feel like it has been even longer. These three people are my rock and my supporters; I don't know where I would be without them. I know the dynamic in the house is going to change once I get home; I am the loudest and tend to throw everyone off when I come home, but I can't wait to cause chaos (in a good way, of course). Being able to talk with my family during dinner or watch TV or listen to music with them is very important to me. Spending time with my family in person is important to me. Being home means family time and goofing off during the summer.

Another reason for being excited to go home is the fact that I don't have classes or homework! Now don't get me wrong; I actually enjoy school and my classes, but honestly, it's time for a break! I want to be able to kick back on the beach and lie out in the sun for the afternoon. I want to walk my dog down the road in my shorts and flip flops. I want to sit inside with the AC blasting while music plays through the television speakers. That's what summer is about, not homework and classes and stress. Just relaxation and fun.

Of course I am going to miss my friends at school, and I know I'll see them in three-ish months, which isn't that long. Of course I'll miss being with the people in APO and doing service projects, and I'll miss the large amount of buffalo sauce I consume while at school (no judgement). But nothing beats the feeling of finally being home and being with your family and your dog.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
