Excerpts From My Dream Journal

Science has never been able to explain why we dream. There are numerous theories that have been thrown about over the years. Is it the brain fulfilling subconscious wants and desires? Is it the brain categorzing and processing its own information? We know it obviously has something to do with the brain. What exactly? We may never know, considering the fact that dreams are so difficult to study and survey.

Allow me to transport you into the detail and depth of several of my most vivid dreams.

1. Studies have established that there are various types of stress dreams. Such as: falling, being chased, showing up to work or school naked...etc. Strangely enough, my stress dreams are not what would be considered 'common'. They involve pregnancy. Specifically me pregnant. I find it hilarious that I can generally tell how stressed I am based on how far along I am in my dream. I was an archeologist and a historian was attempting to explain how a particular group of ancient people lived. I remember that they resided on a series of scattered islands and, at one point, the historians showed me how they safely travelled from one to the next. I was handed a tiny, crumpled piece of paper in which "What have I done with my life," was hand-written on. Next thing I know, I'm heavily pregnant, in labor, and about to give brith on one of the many scattered islands. The historians came up with the brilliant idea of having me give birth in the way that the ancient women would have. For science, of course. I watched myself scream and push when suddenly, a flurry of pictures and bright lights flashed across my mind and it read The End. I woke up in a cold sweat, completely disoriented.

2. This was the first dream I've had in which I honestly hoped that I would have again just so I could finish the ending. It was a glorious, cloudless, spring day. Although, oddly enough, the central setting of this dream took place in a series of ice caves. Everybody and their mother was preparing for a wedding, but the colossal secret about this particular marriage was that the entire event was a set up in order to catch a serial killer. Spoiler Alert: it's a woman, and she had somehow become one of the bride's maids without any knowledge of the wedding party. Trying to stave off boredom, she decides to explore the ice caves and stumbles on a cabinet-type of storage compartment. Upon opening it, she found all sorts of exploring equipment, maps, and journals written by the brides great-something grandfather. Apparently the existence of dragons was quite common knowledge in this dreamland because this particular journal was filled with stories and discoveres about dragons, trying to prove that they existed, and hinting that there was a dragon hidden amongst the ice caves mazes and caverns! Some time later, the groom found the serial killer and engaged her in conversation. It turned out that the two had been involved in an affair several week prior. The dream concluded with the goom claiming, "The way things are going, I'm going to be a married man before anyone figures out who are you."

3. There was this house: a mansion. I had to walk across this beautiful lawn and down a set of ridiculously steep stairs. At the base of this staircase, there was a group of teenage girls leading little girls in a dance class. The only way to get back to the mansion was by suriving this rope, obstacle course that was located hundreds of feet above the ground. This is where it gets weird...I will swear to you that I've had this dream before. I recognized this course, I had made it across before. I kept saying that to myself in the dream, "Don't be afraid. You've made it across before. You can do it again." I was confident as I began. I knew this course. I knew the way. At some point during this attempt, I realized that the path had been changed without my knowledge. I did not make it over and was left stuck on a stump screaming, scared, and sobbing.
