In no particular order, here are a few of the best bits of cinema and entertainment that have flown under the radar of American mainstream entertainment consumption, and in my opinion, are far and away more excellent than what you can find on any major network.
1) What We Do in the Shadows
If you like things that are funny and laughing until your whole body hurts, then watch this. I have watched it countless times, and I still laugh so hard I start crying and my sides hurt for days after. This is perfect for watching after inhaling entire pumpkin buckets of Halloween candy. Take it from someone with experience in that exact scenario.
2) You're The Worst
It's the best, no contest. It's hilarious and brutal and honest and it treats its characters like real people with real problems without annoying sentimentality or overt, preachy life lessons. The third season is halfway finished, but you can catch up through Hulu or other similar entertainment platforms. Be careful, because you will binge watch it in one weekend and then go back and re-watch every episode that made you feel all the feels, and that art history term paper will not write itself.
3) The Secret of Kells
If your tastes run more toward animated films or artful inspirations, this is for you. It is the most visually stunning animated film I've ever seen, and that is not hyperbole. The level of artistry evident in this work is so far above its contemporaries, its unreal. Watch it if you are in the mood for visual inspiration.
4) The Tenth Kingdom
This is a really fun mini-series about a New Yorker girl who gets pulled into a dangerous web of politics in an alternate universe where the Brother's Grimm apparently got the inspiration for their dark fantasy stories.
Have fun and Happy Halloween!
