6 Exam Tips You Need to Slay the Game

I just began my junior year and so far it has been an up and down roller coaster ride. It’s that time where my classes are becoming more specific to my career and my grades actually matter. Of course, I want to say that all I do is eat, sleep, and school, but my life isn’t totally consumed with my studies. We all need a break here and there and I escape to my multiple extracurricular activities and weekend festivities. So, maybe I could have studied every waking hour of my life, but if I did, I would’ve burned out a LONG time ago. So give up some time for yourself because if I can do it, YOU can do it! Therefore, here are some tips to kill it, without killing yourself.

1. Begin studying the first day

Just review pre-lecture and compile your thoughts after lecture. Then repeat throughout the week, leading to exam day. That way, there won’t be the need to cram every single thing you have learned in the last 4 weeks in a weekend. You’ll save your time and be more proficient because you can focus the remaining days reviewing the concept you didn’t fully understand.

2. Get advice from previous students

What better way to get an inside scoop of the exams than students have taken the exam/class themselves?! They are resources. USE AND UTILIZE YOUR RESOURCES.

3. Study in Groups

They say you learn and retain better when you study with others. Especially, when you’re teaching back material that you have learned. You’ll really start to understand and be more productive bouncing ideas back and forth with your peers, especially since your peers know what you’re going through. We’re all in this together. We all want that A.

4. EAT

Don’t forget to eat! Your body needs adequate nutrition to function properly. Instead of grabbing fast food, go for the more fresh, whole foods. It’ll give you more energy to power through.

5. Drink

Drink alcohol? NO. Maybe after the exam to celebrate..not that I am encouraging it, but I mean to drink WATER. HYDRATE YOURSELVES. It’s another key factor to success because dehydration can make you feel ill and we don’t want that going into an exam.

6. SLEEP

I can’t stress this enough. Yes, of course you want to stay up in all the hours of night studying and cramming for a test, but odds are, you’ll only retain half of what you were studying. So, get your 8 hours and be ready to take in the exam with a clear, energized mindset.

7. Take a break

Seriously, this is the most importing thing. Give yourself YOU time. Go out, exercise, read a book. Just do something to get your mind off the topic for a while. Then, resume. You won’t hate yourself as much. Promise.

After using these tips, if you still fail, it isn’t the end of the world, but you need to pull it together. You have to change something about your habits. Find your strengths and weakness and the success will eventually come too. This too is a learning process and in the end you’ll get there. Remember..Cs get degrees!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
