Uncle Jesse, Arnold, Topanga Lawrence, Rory Gilmore and other characters all seem to be taking to the small screen in recent months. Our society seems to be in the mist of a 90s revival. With trends like chokers, jeans skirts, and flannel all making a reappearance, as well as a more alternative sound--such as that from band Twenty One Pilots, taking over our iTunes, it only makes sense that iconic 90s characters would be popping up on our TV screens.
Although there is not yet word of a 'Friends' revival, which had been rumored practically since the show ended, it seems like almost every other 90s or early 2000s series has made it's way back into our lives. With new twists and spins on the classics we love, audiences seem to be captivated by the resurrection of the American 90s sitcom.
Here is a list of the shows that you can throw it back with:
1. Fuller House
The Netflix series follows the recently widowed DJ Tanner as she navigates through life with her three children, sister Stephenie, and BFF Kimmy Gibbler.
2. Girl Meets World
This Disney Channel series is a spin off of the 90s classic "Boy Meets World." This shows follows Cory and Topanga's daughter Riley and her two best friends as they learn lessons about life, love, and friendship.
3. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Although not much has been said about the spin-off series, there was word that it was in the works in 2015. However, Will Smith has not signed onto the show. What's Bel-Air without the Prince? Amirite?
4. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
The highly anticipated mini Netflix series will premiere on Nov 25th of this year. Viewers will get a glimpse into one year of the Gilmore's life.
5. Hey Arnold
A two hour TV movie will premiere on Nickelodeon in 2017 and is supposed to answer questions and tie up loose ends from the series. As Arnold is my OG crush boy, I will be glued to my TV for this one.
6. Legends of the Hidden Temple
The game show will be turned into a scripted movie and follow three siblings as they conquer tasks that are similar to those from the original game. Its said the movie will premiere on Nick on Nov. 26th.
7. The Magic School Bus 360
Ms. Frizzle and her class are said to hit Netflix in late 2016. This time they'll be exploring in a modernized, high-tech school bus. As an education major, this one makes me particularly excited!
8. Bill Nye Saves the World
Bill Nye is back to make science cool again with a Netflix original series to premiere in 2017. Science nerds rejoice!
9. The PowerPuff Girls
Everyone's favorite crime fighting mutant sisters are back! Season one aired on Cartoon Network earlier this year and the series has been renewed for a second season.
10. That's So Raven
Raven Symone recently announced that she has been working with Disney on a reboot of the early 2000s favorite. She will be playing a single mother who discovers one of her children has inherited her physic abilities.
There must be a reason that Americans are so obsessed with 90s and early 2000s TV.
Bob Boyett and Jeff Franklin, “Full House” producers, did an interview with TVGuide.com where they said that they believe the revival happened now for a reason.
“We thought it was very timely," Boyett said. "The right idea finally came along, thanks to Jeff, to do a show that was going to be of interest, that was going to be contemporary that we could move along with.” Franklin also added that he believes that people seem to relax more with 90s characters. In a way, it reminds them of the good old days of sitcoms and "watching your favorites on Friday night."
In a time of uncertainty, with a world full of chaos and a society that seems set on hatred, Americans are comforted by the nostalgia the iconic reboots bring. Early 2000s and 90s revivals and reboots are making everyone TGIF again.
