It just takes one look into your Twitter timeline to see the nearly two million mentions of the hashtag #FreeKesha appear.
For those wondering why it’s been four years since the “Tik Tok” singer has released any new music, it is due to a legal battle the singer is facing with her producer Dr. Luke.
Having worked with artists such as Rihanna, Britney Spears, and T.I., to name a few, Dr. Luke is a well-known persona in the music business, and it was not a surprise in 2009 that Kesha wanted to work with the producer.
The issues arose in 2013, a year after Kesha’s second album “Warrior” came out, with her wanting freedom from her label after creative disputes over her music. Through displaying the signs in her concert about her feelings concerning Dr. Luke, Kesha rose awareness of her current state in music and, in 2014, filed a lawsuit against the producer, claiming sexual harassment and abuse charges.
The case went on to be a two year back and forth battle, with both sides finally being decided in February 2016, sparking the media outcry from fans and musicians upon Kesha being denied the freedom from her label, Sony, and the six album deal her contract entails.
Kesha is free to work with another producer, however, the justice she seeks won’t be happening, and her fear of her music not being promoted is another huge factor. Kesha signed a binding contract with Sony, and the New York court judge over her case stated that the contract can’t be broken due to contract law.
Thousands of fans have shown their support, with singers such as Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, and Ariana Grande publicly stating their support for Kesha’s freedom and the boycott of Sony products.
Kesha hasn’t spoken about the court ruling as of yet, but it will be interesting to see what moves she makes next, as her career is in jeopardy.
All she wants to do is make the music that made us fall in love with her carefree antics and ability to pump up the dance floor; hopefully, something will be done to her favor and to bring us back the dance beats music lovers have greatly missed.
