Everything You Can't Pack In Your Suitcase

Things to pack that are not things at all.

Everything You Can't Pack In Your Suitcase
Caroline Connly

It is that time of year again. August rolls around with the excitement of a fresh start to another amazing school year. College students are heading back to school-- some will go abroad, some will begin their first or last year. No matter how far along you are in your four (maybe even five year plan, just kidding Dad!) year college journey, there are some things that you MUST pack in your suit case. However, these things are not things at all. The most essential things you need to pack as you begin this school year will transform you into the person you aspire to be, as you continue to learn and grow.

1. Kindness

Kindness is one of the most important attributes in my book. Being kind means accepting others for who they are, accepting yourself and treating everyone you encounter with compassion. Kindness is a habit and can be displayed through a listening ear, or helping hand. Always remember that everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about.

2. Adventure

A new year brings along a new sense of adventure. It is your time to try things you have always wanted to do, whether its run for class president, join a new club or make many new friends. Do not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone this year-- take risks and remind yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to.

3. Curiosity

Have you ever wondered what else is out there beyond your own little world? Use this upcoming fall to discover what lies beyond your campus boundaries. Volunteer at a local food pantry, learn the important of healthy eating habits, transform your body at the gym, or push yourself to your limit by taking courses that challenge your beliefs. Those who are curious will never stop learning new things about themselves.

4. Strength

Push yourself. Physically, mentally, academically. In all of your relationships, be the rock that someone can count on. Prove to yourself that you can and you will accomplish all of the goals you have set for yourself. The battle between who you are and who you want to be is being fought inside of you. Win.

5. Patience

College is funny because you often feel like you are in complete control of your destiny, but other times you feel completely out of control. Straight A's will not happen over night, your body will not transform immediately, despite how many times you go to the gym, and your crush may not see how special you are right away. Patience is a virtue that all college students have to learn to develop in order to appreciate the journey they are on. Remember, every part of your journey is to be cherished.

6. Gratitude

Be thankful. How lucky are you that you get to attend a university that has given you unlimited possibilities for a better future? Whether it is your dream school or not where you intended to be, it is SO important to realize how fortunate you are. Education gives you an opportunity to build a better life for yourself. Being healthy, happy, feeling loved and enjoying your time at school are all things to be very thankful for. Always appreciate all of your blessings.

7. Love

Love with no limit. Make sure you let the people around you know how special they are and do not be afraid to express how you feel. Speak your mind with grace and elegance. Make every person you meet feel like a somebody-- always leaving people a little bit better than you found them. Never settle for anything less than you deserve and love whole heartedly. Just because you haven't found what you are looking for right now, does not mean you never will. Experience new love this year, and open your heart to all those encounter along the way.

Best of luck this year :)

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. You feel like you will have never-ending classwork to catch up on if you miss class, so you end up going sick and then it just takes longer to get better. Being sick in college is really tough and definitely not a fun experience. Here are the 15 stages that everyone ends up going through when they are sick at college.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
