This past week my friends and I moved into our first apartment together, which is an of itself is a pretty big accomplishment. Gone are the (somewhat good, partially awful) years of living in a dorm room, and I think we're all more than ready for the sweet freedom and comfort that sharing an apartment all our own will provide. I mean, we're going to have more space, more room to move around, an actual kitchen and living room, and our own washer and dryer, just to name a few things - and something like that is bound to be a cause for celebration, right?
Right. At least, right for the most part. While moving into our apartment has definitely been a reason to celebrate, its also been a chance for my friends and myself to do some things we haven't done before, to act a bit more like responsible adults, and yes, you guessed it - it's been a reason for us to stress. I know I'm technically an adult, but this is one of the first times I've ever really felt like one. On that note, there are quite a few things that I think we all wished we knew before we got ready to move into our first apartment.
I wish I had known how to call companies and set up utilities. Of course, I have experience talking on the phone from working, but something about taking orders and transferring calls doesn't quite equate to telling someone on the phone all of your personal information so they can set up your power. When it comes down to it, as simple as that sort of phone call can be, setting up utilities has definitely been a little nerve-wracking for all of us because it involves things like credit and money and all sorts of other really important things, all this besides the fact that it actually allows us to have water, internet, and power.
So yes, a bit terrifying it you really think about it.
I think we all wished we had of known that you can never really be too prepared for move-in day. There's always going to be things that you wish you had brought, and there's always going to be things you wish you hadn't. There's no need to over-pack because any department store you might need to visit is just a small trip away. Oppositely, it's better to bring everything you think you might need now rather than just having to go back later. For me, being over-prepared is better than the opposite, but either way, what you bring on move-in day doesn't have to be super stressful.
You'll get everything you need eventually, so you don't need to worry. Besides, if you're like me, you're bound to forget something, so there's no real point in worrying about something that is inevitably going to happen.
It's important to remember that everything might not run as smoothly as planned. It might randomly thunderstorm. You might realize that you actually don't know how to set up a WiFi router without you parents, and you don't really know how to cook like you probably should. Even after you set up those utilities, you might realize later on that you don't actually know that much about paying bills at the end of every month.
You might also realize that being an adult is a bit harder than it looks. It's going to be crazy, but most importantly, it's going to be worth it. Happy move-in day!
