An Open Letter To My Great-Grandbig

We all have that one person that we look up to in our Chapter because they make us smile whenever they are around, and that is my Great-Grandbig.

Dear Great Grandbig,

Our story isn’t like most however, it is unique because it is ours. We didn't meet at recruitment, an off-campus party, or Hobby Lobby, we met in the Math tutoring center. At the time I was just looking for some tutoring and I don’t even know why you were there because you weren’t taking math that semester, but instead of just finding a tutor, I found you.

After helping me look for my lost lanyard, that I just recently stopped wearing around my neck because it was a “Freshman thing," we sparked up a conversation and you started discussing upcoming rush events. Despite my excuses about probably not fitting in at a sorority house, being too busy, and wanting to consider it sophomore year, you helped me make a decision that changed my entire life. You insisted I come to recruitment.

With your persuasion, I agreed to go to DPhiE’s Haunted House Fundraising event which was taking place on family weekend. You immediately welcomed me at the door, making me feel at home, and you managed to drag my little scaredy cat sister along too. As I soon approached the exit after touring the house, I knew I wanted to return.

Recruitment swung around a few weeks later, and every night you managed to approach me introducing me to more and more sisters. I recognized I had a connection with all of them and I knew you were the one to thank.

The moment I received my bid, and saw you crying as I stood on the balcony, I knew I had done something right.

Bid Day, one of my fondest memories of Freshman year, would have never been experienced if it wasn’t for you. I’ll always treasure the nights that you hung out with me in Big’s room, when you gave me a billion nice things during pass-downs, and so many more that I could go on about for hours.

We have a family tree like no other. Seriously, no Little had their Great, Great, Great, Great Grandbig attend their Big/Little night except me. The cards were in my favor becoming your Great-Grandlittle.

As you move into your first house and attend Grad school, I wish you luck. I know you are going to do great things in the real world and, already, I am so beyond proud of you.

Thank you for always speaking so highly of me, and for letting every sister know I was more than just the shy girl at recruitment.

Thank you for constantly having your door open, and telling me I was welcome anytime.

Thank you for allowing me to find my home, and always supporting me.

And most importantly, thank you for creating a bond between us that will last a lifetime.

Sincerely,

Your Great-Grandlittle

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
