There’s no doubt Cashmere Cat is an incredibly talented producer. I had the privilege of seeing him perform at an intimate birthday party in downtown Manhattan back in January standing only 2 feet from his decks and the man himself. It’s safe to say that was one of the most memorable nights of my life so far.
This year has been a huge year for Cashmere Cat. He’s worked with music’s top names such as Kanye West, Selena Gomez, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, and… well, you get the point. His unique take on electronic music shows his diversity and flexibility while still maintaining a signature sound that can be identified in almost all tracks he’s worked on. The Norwegian musical genius incorporates synth pop, R&B, and Hip Hop beats that will be stuck in your head for hours after listening. Even with endless thought I can’t decide which sub genre of electronic music Cashmere Cat falls under, but ultimately that makes him that much more unique.
To top off his incredibly successful year he’s been touring with the also talented producer, SOPHIE. I caught their show at Terminal 5 recently and it did not disappoint. SOPHIE is the perfect opening act. The Scottish born producer starts the show with what is described as a “hyperkinetic” take on Pop music, but I’ve heard it called “bubble gum” pop due to the high pitched vocals and I personally like the sound of that so much more. Cashmere Cat came on stage shortly after with what looked like an elaborate light display; what looked like numerous source fours behind him in a slanted grid formation. The light setup consumed the whole stage leaving no room for him or his table, except for when he gets up on stages and walks between the lights during a few songs. A portion of the crowd was blocked off in the front center where die hard fans stood only a few feet away at eye level. Speaking of the crowds, this had to be one of the chillest atmospheres i’ve ever experienced at Terminal 5 (and I go there a lot, so that’s saying something). He dropped several classics such as ‘Mirror Manu’ and his ‘Do You’ remix, but if you’re a Kanye fan you’ll ecstatic to know he drops several songs from TLOP such as ‘Wolves’ (which he worked on) and ‘Waves’.
Cashy Cat’s tour may be coming to an end now, but keep a lookout for the next time he or SOPHIE are touring in a city near you, I promise you won't regret it.
