How music makes us happy or how it affects us in general is an old study, but it doesn’t stray away from the fact that I think it’s something that everyone should pursue music in some way shape or form.
When my mom was pregnant with me, she would place headphones to her stomach. She told me when she did this, I would "dance" in her tummy. My mom knew from that moment I’d fall in love with music.
Every night before I would fall asleep, I would listen to Disney songs such as "Beauty and the Beast." So, going to sleep without listening to music doesn’t work out for me. It’s a necessity.
It Connects People
Whether it’s listening, playing, or producing music, I think everyone should find that one song, artist or genre to fall in love with. It’s so fun when someone can play guitar or piano because music connects people and it’s such a beautiful sight. Music draws a crowd and it’s one reason why I love going to concerts. When everyone knows the lyrics or is simply there because they love music in general, that’s cool either way.
Music Makes Us Happy
Music releases dopamine in your brain.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I love Paramore as much as cats love yarn. When I saw them live for the first time with one of my close friends, I was on cloud nine. I was the happiest kid on Earth (although, I wasn’t in Disney world). Waiting outside for about seven hours and being just a couple feet away from the stage (and Hayley Williams) was absolutely amazing.
Each concert I’ve been to has been such an awesome experience because it was so beautiful to see everyone come together, singing their heart outs. I’ve also left each concert with nothing but a smile on my face.
It Makes Us More Productive
There’s always a time for when we have to sit down and become productive, but are distracted by social media and other things. Listening to music can help you dance and let loose, but get stuff done as well. Whether it’s chores, doing homework, or cleaning, it helps a lot.
Self-Expression (Emotions)
Writing lyrics, creating a melody, and mimicking a beat can release stress and form self-expression within each individual.
The words in a song are a form of poetry, just with a beat or melody behind it, which creates a symphony of sounds. Whether the song is fun and upbeat or heartfelt and slow, the emotion behind the song can be heard behind the voice or the way they play it.
You Develop Skills
I’ve been pursuing in music for about my entire life, but I only picked up the viola, then the piano and eventually the guitar at the start of elementary school.
In fifth grade, my orchestra teacher asked me to do a solo song. To my surprise, he chose me. It was the first time I felt like I could do anything, and that felt so amazing. I felt a sense of accomplishment.
With playing guitar, I developed creative skills, that weren’t just in music, but in art as well. In songs, I can mimic the beat and can almost mimic the notes by ear, but I’m also not quite there yet.
Music is an amazing outlet. It brings people together and is known by everyone. Playing a musical instrument and pursuing in it has changed my life for the better.
