As I am writing this article, story, experience or whatever you want to call it, midterms are happening. We have multiple papers due, and we have big exams that we are studying for hoping to pass with a "C" or better. Midterms this year made me realize that we all need help with papers or with studying, which is okay. We have tutors on campus and writing consultants to help you with test preparation and proof reading.
I have to admit that I love helping people when they are stuck or just lending a hand. When the service is returned to me, I have a hard time accepting help because I want to figure it out on my own. I bet many people feel like that. However, since starting college, I put my pride aside to seek out help for my classes, whether it was discussing paper assignments or going over material that went over my head. We all struggle, and that does not make you any less smart.
I am majoring in English, and I go to the Writing Center all the time to read my papers out loud and to ask for help. I am a strong writer but being a strong writer does not mean you do not need people to proof read your work. To me, the more eyes looking over my paper, the better my essay is going to be. Further, I always go to my professor's office hours when I am stuck on a topic to write for a paper. I went last week because I could not pick a topic to write on for my Senior capstone in English Seminar. I literally told my professor that there was something wrong with my brain. There wasn't, of course, but we worked through what I thought of the book, and now I know what I am writing about. I just need to do research now.
I am taking a human biology class, and the amount of times I have been to see my professor is insane. However, I do not look at it like that; I'm not a science person and a lot of the information in class goes over my head which leads me to my professor's office door for clarification on the notes.
Remember that there is nothing to be ashamed of if you seek help from tutors on campus or going to your professor's office hours. They are there to help you because they care.
