If you are not familiar with what YouTube Rewind is, It is a video that the company posts every year around December as a way to highlight the major strides and news on the creative platform and in pop culture. It started out in two thousand and ten as a small little recap of all the most watch videos and by two thousand and twelve grew into a music video sort of thing.
For the past six years, they have been creating these funny and original videos but these last three have not been such a success. Youtube Rewind has a theme or title each year, and this year it was titled "YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind | #YouTubeRewind". Now, The title says "Everyone Controls Rewind", Correct?
I wish that was the case, Youtube put together a video littered with Fortnite and left out a lot of major things that happened of this year in pop culture. Compared to the twenty sixteen version where they incorporated tributes to Prince's and David Bowie's deaths. Many were expecting to see a Stan Lee reference, even possibly see Stefan Karl Stefansson reference or maybe even a Steven Hawking reference and YouTube disappointed us by not doing so.
Let us not forget how they didn't incorporate PewDiePie inside the video, nor did they feature the battle he is currently winning for the channel with the most subscribers. It's understandable why given one of his latest controversies with the live stream dealing with the game PUB-G. But they still had Ninja, a man who is a fortnight centered channel and he even said the same word earlier this year in one of his streaming videos.
Granted Ninja is very popular with younger kids and they are maybe even younger than Felix's viewers. Yet he gets a get 'out of jail free' pass? It seems a bit biased on YouTube's end. Both used these racial slurs and only one was punished for doing so, and one got more exposure in a video made by the company.
Also, Who decided that Fortnite would be the only game mentioned in the video? There were many other amazing games that were released this year like Red Dead Redemption II and God of War. The Gaming population was barely portrayed correctly with only a handful of gaming channels, and maybe not even that, and one game mentioned it is a pretty big step back compared to the other years.
Not to mention the fact that they didn't have major references to the many major YouTube videos and the countless dramas they had this year between its own YouTubers. Dramas like The Paul Brothers against KSI in the fight, T-Series and PewDiePie, The Lura Lee Controversy, Tanna Con, and many more were failed to be mentioned. Shane Dawsons Documentaries on Jake Paul, Jeffrey Star, and Tanna Con were not mentioned at all either.
In conclusion, No one is truly happy with the way Rewind was put together this year, WE see now that YouTube has stayed way too far from its viewers, and content creators and it ultimately will be its own downfall.
