Everyone Has A Story

We've all been through something, so treat others with kindness.

Everyone Has A Story

Recently, I was so touched by fellow students in my English class, and I felt I had to share why.

Our professor gave us an assignment, a more personal one, about scars that have impacted our lives. These scars could be emotional, physical, or mental. We were to write about our experiences, do further research on that topic, and give an oral presentation for our classmates.

Yes, getting up in front of an entire class and sharing personal stories doesn't seem like the easiest thing in the world. I'll tell you, with mine, I was terrified. You are practically exposing the most vulnerable aspect of your life to people you barely know. However, I never expected this assignment to affect me the way that it did.

We had three people present each day, each with their own story to share. The overwhelming nerves were apparent in every person. I don't think anyone necessarily wanted to open up, like this at least, to the class. It wasn't really something we had in mind.

Students got in front of our class and shared stories. There were stories about losing family members and how losing them impacted their growing up. There we're stories about being bullied in middle and high school, about being made fun of on social media, about being picked on for their weight, and even stories about slut shaming. Someone even came out to the class, introducing us to her girlfriend, and explained how her families reacted. She shared quotes from her family members that were so heartbreaking. Others shared family problems, relationship disasters, drug related problems, and how all of these experiences effected their family's dynamic.

All of the stories were so inspirational. These experiences created scars, or left a mark on their lives. They are experiences that my classmates will never be able to change. But through each one, they seem to have grown from it. They overcame the hardships they faced.

Although this assignment was tough and forced us to open up about some of the toughest times of our lives, it really opened my eyes.

Every single person has been through something, lost a loved one, or been hurt in some way shape or form.

Looking at them, you would never have guessed they went through these things.

I think it's important to treat everyone with respect and kindness.

You never know what people are going through.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
