Everyone Should Take A Break From Social Media

As useful as social media can be to keep up with what's going on in the world, it can also be a toxic thing to be addicted to. So everyone deserves a break away from it all.

Everyone Should Take A Break From Social Media

Last weekend I went on a camping trip with some friends, and I had basically no connection at all down there. I didn't absolutely need it, I don't think anybody really does, but it was always nice when I was bored to be able to pick up my phone and scroll through Instagram or Twitter to see what everyone was up to.

Social media has been a great way for me to keep up with what's going on in the news or in the world of my favorite celebrities, but especially keeping up with my friends back home while I am away at school.

But social media has also been huge in making me upset, either through seeing my friends having a good time while I am doing nothing but homework and working all semester.

Or just simply wishing I had the life that all of these people online had.

So getting away was actually much needed. I was able to hang out with my friends and focus on spending every minute with them, not worrying about what anyone else was doing. It felt so nice to not even have my phone on me half the time and feel like I had to constantly check for notifications.

When I did get back home and got a signal, it was crazy trying to catch up on everything that I missed that whole weekend. Area 51 memes were everywhere and I was so confused on some of the stuff that was trending, it reminded me of how out of the loop I am when I'm away from social media.

But I also was glad to reach the realization that I don't always need to be in the loop. It's good to know the news and current events, but it's also good to get away from every negative thing in the world and just focus on yourself and your mental health.

That's why I think everyone should, at some point, take a break from social media. Go relax. Care about yourself, and not everyone else's stories or Instagram posts that you're missing out on.

The world is so much bigger than technology and the internet. So get out there and enjoy it. You deserve it.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
